Savage Rascal problems

I bought a brand new one for my nephew and had the same problems. I returned the POS and got another new one which was also a POS. I won't be getting a 3rd one. Your first rifle at a young age should not be a frustrating experience and risk turning a young kid off of shooting sports when they get older. Savage failed miserably on the rascal.

If you can return it, see if you can get a Henry Mini-bolt. I just got one for my 7 year old. He's put through about 400 rounds through it of CCI quiet with no problems. Put through about 100 rounds of Federal Automatch with a few fail to fire.

It has Williams fiber sights which make sighting in very easy for him. Very well built, easy to clean for him. I'm quite happy with it. I've fired it a few times, and it is very accurate and fun. it's even factory tapped for a scope mount if you wish to go that route.

Here's a picture of the sights. (pic taken on my phone is a dark room) It was so easy to teach him to sight in. "Put the red dot on what your aiming for, and put the green dots on each side, and gently pull the trigger." Doesn't get any simpler then that.

I just ordered a pink rascal for my daughter. I'm really hoping that this is a rare defect!
The rascal gets great reviews online and is the perfect kids first gun. Especially when it's available in pink for girls.
Hopefully the retailer or savage can make it right quickly.

I had a few light strikes on mine, but it went away as the gun broke in. The Federal bulk ammo has far fewer misfires than the Winchester stuff. I put a red dot on it, and the sprog has a great time whacking clays on the backstop.

I was shooting sub 1" groups with the pink one today it was fun lol. Target set at 25 yards using the 2.5-3" 25 yard scoring cards.

My kids enjoyed shooting it for the first time. I only set them up at 10 yards. My oldest gal was doing great my younger kept shooting the dirt in front of the target. They were shooting at a splatter deer target. I need to get them one of those 3d targets that bounce.

1 fail to fire on a Winchester round. Second shot with same she'll fired.

my son hit a 12" gong at 100 yards once in 10 shots with the stock peep. At 50 yards, he rarely misses...he's got probably close to 500 rounds downrange with his daisy buck, and he's quite good with it even with that 10lb trigger, but accurate range is lacking, so that led me to the Rascal...I contacted Savage Canada, will update as this progresses...

So I may as well spill the beans. The store I purchased it from is SAIL in Oshawa (stopped in for camping gear on the way home from a friend's cottage)...when i called on Friday, they wanted me to drive all the way there to drop it off (I live well over an hour away), then drive all the way back again to pick it up. I still have not received a call back from the hunting manager as to what they want me to do with it. However, big thanks to BGglock17, Savage Canada is sending a UPS shipping label directly to me, so I can ship it to them directly at no cost...so far it's looking good...

Filed the firing pin today. Worked much better. Or of 30 rounds fired, only two didn't go off first time. Federal bulk (from the 525 pack) worked really well feeding and they chambered really nice compared to Aguila. Here's a pic showing the difference in firing pin profile:

Good to know - I am going to do this to my son's gun now.

received the shipping label today, will be shipping it out here in a half hour so...kudos to Savage Canada, not so much for SAIL...

Why can't the rascals be hassle free like the other savage .22's? My MKII works great

there's mention of it having a weaker striker spring so the action is easier for kids to operate...

So I received the rifle back from Savage today, it was only gone 9.5 business days...RMA slip said they replaced the bolt assembly. and test fired 20 rounds with no failures. The firing pin is definitely narrower...

I just want to say Savage Canada (Lakefield) really impressed me with their customer service and RMA process...I would not hesitate to buy another Savage Rifle...
