Hi all,

I have bought a savage rascal for a youth shooter. They have recently been doing well with the peep sights, and Santa is thinking a scope might be a nice touch. I am thinking maybe 1-4 or 2-7... low power is more important than high power. I find the higher powers are difficult for young shooters to adjust to.

I would appreciate any on a scope that would be a good fit. As for cost, the more affordable the better, while eliminating junk.

My daughter has a Bushnell Elite 2-7x33 on her pink Rascal and I find that is about as big as you want to go. I tried other scopes such as a 3-9 and a 4-12 but they looked silly. Now that my AR15 is a paperweight, I have a spare vortex red dot I may try rigging up on it. My daughter was made use the stock peep sight for the first year till she got good with it. I wanted her to at least know how to be effective with open sights first before glass. Her young eyes put mine to shame with the peeps.

i'm debating rascals for my younguns. what age did you start her at?

I started him at 5, but each child is different. Some kids are hesitant or really just not that interested in which case there is no need to push them into it at the at age. If they are super keen to learn than I would say 5 is about as early I would go with them handling a firearm by themselves, with very direct supervision of course.

The rascal is great because there is no firing pin plunger, it cocks when the bolt is lifted up. The short length of pull is perfect for a young one. Not the cheapest at around $300 for the wood stock model, but when I look at my own firearm bills that’s reasonable

I got into firearms a little late but my son started with Nerf guns, learning all of the basic rules. Only exception to them is if there was a willing participant on the other end. From there it moved to cheap air soft, pellet guns, and finally shooting my 22’s at 7 he got his first 22 at 8, first centerfire at 10 I believe. He now outshoots me when he wants to, and I think I’m a pretty fair shot.

My daughter was 8 I think. She was shooting dimes taped to the target at 20 yds using the peep sight after a couple hours.
I found using reactive targets best to peak their interest. I used some firebird explosive targets and she loved the pop and smoke they made.

I was wondering the same as OP, Santa is bringing a Pink Rascal down the chimney for my 4yr old who has been asking for one since the spring. I might go with a red dot and see what her reaction is to the rifle first. peep sights when she's a bit older.

Just a heads up, factory scope mounts from Savage MKII FVSR will allow you to mount a red dot on the forward position. Interferes with the bolt on the rear position.

I just mounted the Rascal factory bases on my nephews Rascal. I bought the two piece and the Weaver one piece multi slot rail for it as I wanted to be prepared for either case when I met him to mount his current scope. He went with the two piece so I have the Weaver if someone needs it at my cost. Saves me returning it for a refund and it might help someone out if your local gun store doesn’t have it. (I know I had to try 5 places to get them.)

Cheers, Peter

I tried a red dot and a small scope on my son’s rascal and I found both were way too high for him to be able to look through them with a cheek weld. I went back to the factory sights and it’s much better. Now he only wants to shoot my gsg-15 though, I made the mistake of letting him go from a single shot to a semi and now we go through a lot more ammo lol.

Where did you source those scope mounts if you don’t mind me asking, I just picked up a Rascal for the grandson and I’m thinking a red dot isn’t a bad way to go for him

The hole spacing light be correct, but they very clearly don’t fit that rifle. Just buy the Rascal mounts. Cabela’s lists them, as I’m sure others do as well. Plus those Savage factory bases are utter garbage. Horribly out of spec to the point that most rings don’t fit even close to properly.

The contour is off yes, the rascal mounts are too high IMO. For this application they work just fine. If I want to run irons I do not have to remove the base. Everyone's pro/con list will vary.

The Simmons scopes are the way to go. I own a few and they've held up great. I put a Redfield 2-7x on one of my 22s and it was a waste of money IMHO. Amazon has the Simmons, but they're usually available locally as well wherever you are.
