Savage rascal vs cricket youth

First gun I ever shouldered was a Cooey. Considering the pile of them I have now, if I ever have brats that'll be their first as well.

Never seen the Cricket, but the Savage looks like a fine beginner rifle. They have a few of them on the wall in Fishing World, as mentioned: blue, green, and pink stocks for whatever mood the youngster is in.

I've talked about the Rascal allot since I bought one for my daughter, I think they're excellent guns. Everything is scaled-down for child-size hands/bodies, so someone with big mitts (like myself) might find them a bit difficult to use. I mention that in case you're planning your "I'll use it too honey" conversation with your wife. :) With grouse-sniping plans for ours, I tracked-down an EGW base (they exist! lol) for ours and put on the old fixed, 3x scopechief. Here is a photo of my 9 year old son using it this past summer;

Since that photo was taken, absolutely NO grouse have been shot with it...BUT...my daughter did just spend an afternoon in a friends barn clearing pigeons with it, and a pocket full CCI Quiet-22 Did a dandy job of that, I don't think she missed once.

actually, its not just "i'll use it too" but rather "we can all use it"
which we will.
wife and i have both shouldered it at CT.
we like.
:)

how quiet are these cci quiets?
do we need hearing protection?

'You' might not need hearing protection, but I would recommend it for the youngster, even if just to get them in the habit of using safety equipment.

That said, the CCI quiets are pretty quiet. Subsonic, they don't have the sharp crack the standard velocity rounds have. After a few, I tend to just forget that I'm hearing them.

Agreed. If you're referring to the photo I posted~he had it on most of the day, but was shooting the Quiet-22 when that photo was taken. The sound of the rounds hitting the soup can was louder than the shot going off.

I have both a cricket in pink laminate for my daughter and a red rascal I just bought 2 weeks ago for my son. they both have peep sights, cricket has a lock that when pushed in you can't close the action, rascal has accutrigger, rascal has smaller grip and shorter butt stock. I had never seen either and ordered the cricket online 7 years ago(daughter is 7 now) and same with the rascal(son is 4), had never seen one and ordered it online. the rascal is perfect for my son and daughter at the moment size wise....... I find the cricket a little big for them, my daughter is just starting to grow into the cricket a little better, last year she had to have it in my lead sled to shoot it. i'll try and get my wife to take a pic of both side by side tonight for comparison.
this was two summers ago

Don't forget about the Henry mini bolt - I couldn't get my hands on a savage or cricket and ended up with the mini bolt for my daughter - I have been inpressed with them and - the front sight was broken when I got it (used). I called Henry about getting a new one and they shipped me one no charge - thought that was pretty good customer service..

I do find the crickett a little more grown up friendly, thicker pistol grip and thicker forearm and about 1/2" longer buttstock. but is heavier and bulky for the kids. and you can see the little lock to push in right in front of the trigger guard on it. it's a nice extra safety feature my wife likes.
I prefer the crickett over the rascal, but I really wanted to get my son a t/c hotshot but couldn't find the one in camo or black like he wanted, then he saw the red rascal and there was no talking him out of it..... after all it's his and if he likes it all is well. and if I want to take one out it's the pink crickett.... just hope nobody sees me with it!!!!!
