I would like to get my 7yo son his first rifle. We were recently at a basspro in Alabama and he was able to shoulder the display model. It seemed to fit him perfectly. Does anyone have experience with this rifle? Quality/reliability/safety? Are there better options? We were unable to try any other youth models, and I will be buying online (no local stores to try anything else). I'm not overly concerned with price, just want something that he can use for a few years and then hand down to his little sister when he upgrades.

Thanks

Got one for my 5 yr old son. He loves i! Got it in blue. Its a single shot with oversized safety and it's great for learning the fundamentals. He loves loading the rounds and ejecting them on his own. I got it on sale for $150 and have had zero issues with it thus far.

Got one for each of my young sons -- one polymer, one hardwood stock.

It came down to the Savage Rascal vs the Henry mini-bolt. Without detracting from the little Henry, I went with the Rascal because it's a perfectly scaled-down miniature of my bolt-action rifles, so what they learn on the Rascal will translate smoothly when they're older. I also like the peep sights and accu-trigger. Plus at around 31" OAL and under 3 pounds, it makes a decent backpacking 22.

The Rascal is a great little rifle for kids, I highly recommend it. Ours has moved from our middle child to our youngest I think, here are a couple of photos from the weekend of it breaking (sitting) clay pigeons @ 50 yards. Easy shot for the Rascal, but with a fixed 3x scope...a little more challenging than it might sound! My oldest son was knocking sand-filled, 12ga. shotgun hulls over @ 100 yards with the Marlin 795 and a $50 3-9x scope. The Ruger 10/22 I had would have put fear in the hearts of those same shotgun hulls...but they'd have been safe. :)

Thanks to all who replied. Now all I have to do is find one in his fav colour red. Readily available black or wood stock wont cut it. I guess it's my fault for showing him the different colour options.

I bought my son a Savage CUB, same gun, but with a laminate stock. I don't think they make it any more. Definitely a good buy for the money. Quite accurate and with the accutrigger too.

Know what you mean. Had to get one in hi viz yellow!! He will love it. Lightweight, acctrigger. Just a good all round beginner gun. (I like it too!)

still looking for a dovetail mount any suggestions?

^? The rifle is drilled for bases (or and EGW 1pc. base now) but neither are dovetail/rimfire-style. All you need are different rings. (Weaver base style, more common anyway) I have my Rascal bases if you want to PM me, don't need them.
