A round peg on the lug would engage the notch in the receiver just fine, if it is the same width.
Remington does not use an indexing system on its rifles. An indexing jig is used to hold the lug in place as the barrel is torqued in. No doubt a similar system could be used on a Savage to avoid having to eyeball it. As the barrel, barrel nut and receiver are tightened together, the lug would be inclined to shift. It can be tapped with a non-marring hammer in an attempt to keep it in position.
