Savage/ Redfield scope mounting issues?

I just got my wife a Savage "Lady Hunter" in .270, I had a Redfield Revolution scope on a rifle that I wanted to put back to iron sights so I tried to mount it on the Savage. The issue I'm having is that, using a Weaver mounting system, the scope tube on the Redfield is way too short to span the Savage long action. I'm sure there all sorts of simple solutions to this problem but since I've never had it before I'm not exactly sure what they are, or what my best option is. Any advice would be appreciated.
 
I will assume you are using two piece bases?

Easiest thing would be to swap to a 1 piece picatinny style base which would allow you to mount the rings wherever you need.
 
You can also get Weaver extension rings which is easiest. Personally I don,t like one piece bases on a hunting rifle.

Yes, using 2 piece bases. Hard to say until I try it but it looks like a rail would make the ejection port pretty small, has anyone put a rail on a Savage? No ejection issues?

In spite of being a short action I had the same issue with my Savage 11 in .243.

A fellow gun nut was kind enough to sell me a one piece weaver/picatiny scope rail he had for sale. I'm not sure if the size/cut of the ejection ports are the same on your rifle and mine but the set up works good on mine for both eye relief and cartridge ejection.

Cabellas sells the base you are looking for... Long action version of course as yours is a .270. I know as I had one and it the holes didn't line up on my short action rifle.
 
I have a 1 piece weaver rail on my Savage 116 338wm. Its tighter than im used to but very manageable. No worries about space, it throws the brass just the same.
 
I could be wrong but I think the Savage Axis mounts have their screws located differently then the 111.

At least that what I could tell from handling both in the packages at Cabellas.
