I am looking at purchasing a factory Savage rifle to give this precision thing a go. My question is would you buy the f/tr in a 1/12 twist or the model 12 VLP in a 1/10 twist with 26" barrel instead of 30" for the F/tr both would be in 308 cal. The F/tr right now would cost me about $350.00 more . Is it worth it? I would be shooting at ranges of only 200 yards.
Thanks
Danny

Unfortunately 200 yards is all I have access to. I would have to travel many hours to shoot further. Hypothetically, if I could get to a 500 yard range, would it make a difference then?

Wouldn't make any difference at 500 yards. At 1000 yards, they'd both shoot well, though all other things being equal you might want to choose the 30" barrel if you were going to be regularly shooting 1000 yards.

Buy the rifle that appeals to you more, for whatever reasons, rational or irrational; get the "I like it" one.

I have only bought a few savages so I'm no expert. I don't think they necessariy get more accurate the more money you spend. But they might.

Anyway some things to think about:

1. How much precision do you want.

2. How much are your willing to pay for it.

3. Will you want more precision after say 1000 rounds.

4. How much are you willing to pay for the extra precision.

5. How old will you be after several repetitions of the above. Based on part weight time not shooting time.

Dan here's something to ponder. Team savage uses Savage model 12 target rifles. They all have 30 inch barrels. Nuff said. The 308 model 12 F/TR is the way to go. Capable to win if you do your part. Spend it the first time it only hurts once. Upgrade it hurts twice.

Be sure to invest in some good glass, you can always transfer it to a better rifle when you need it. Bad optics wont help a good rifle. For 200yds, almost any rifle will out shoot you if your starting out. Dont go buying a rifle like its going to be your last purchase, upgrade when you need to, transfer the lense, and your good to go.

How does the 12" handle heavy bullets? With the new powders the 208 AMAX/BTHP and 210 Bergers look like a good idea.

Depending on altitude a 12 "can" stabilize the 208 amax. Its really on the edge but possible. My 12 twist shilen does a good job on 190 SMk's.

Either way I am sure you will agree that it won't make too much difference under 500yrds.

As far as glass goes, I have a Leupold Mark iv 4.5-14 waiting to be installed. The FT/R with the 1:12 twist really looks like my best option for a non custom rig. Thanks for all your thoughts
