I have been told that when mounting a scope on savage rifles, you have to use special mounts and the scope is typically set further forward. Is there any truth to this?

Yes, if you have a short body scope on a long action rifle, ie 270, 30-06 etc. I just went through this last week. weaver 402 on front and 46 or 402 on the rear. Or you can go with a one peice base like a weaver 413 or 413 T . Or.. you can go with offset rings. Western gun parts and Wholesale sports in Edmonton have the 402 in stock.

I don't know the numbers but a simple Weaver type extension base of the correct thickness and hole spacing for the front base is the easiest fix.
