Hey guys, thinking about getting back into the HMR game...undecided about whether or not to build-up/re-scope my 93FV for gopher duty next summer...or get back to the ultimate gopher slayer. :) Anyhow, as a hunting-specific rifle, I'm giving thought to a stainless one for the first time. Either a 93R17 FVSS, or, a 93R17 BVSS. Accuracy is paramount of course, so I'm wondering...have any of you found your stainless-barreled Savages to be different accuracy-wise, or no difference at all?

Thanks for taking a moment to respond. Only question is..if I go stainless...is how to make that shiny barrel a matte one! :)

I had a savage SS in 22 mag that was very accurate however being heavy barrel I found it a pain to carry around in the bush.

Bull barrel is fine if you are just going to set up in a field for the afternoon...

I will say I still own 3 22mags and none are as accurate as the Savage heavy ss barrel one I sold was but all 3 are more then capable of taking game... I shoot at.

(one marlin 983T, one savage 93 camo package, one stevens 305f.)

I also have a Savage 17 hmr sporter barrel blued and just for fun after punching paper with any of my the 22's I bring out the 17 just to show them up.

BTW Where you shooting gopher in Ontario?

Boy.....I wish I was. :) Only groundhogs here, plan on heading to Alberta next summer. Something tells be I'll beat my personal "varmint" best~7 in one day. As my buddies out there say, "bring lots of ammo". :)

I own just ten acres and I've shot about 32 in a day. I shot on a guys land that was infested, shot over 100 in a day, didn't even dent the population.

That's how we shoot too. We shoot until we're sick of it, and there's still plenty of gophers left.

Anyway, I don't think you'll find any real accuracy difference with blued or stainless. You may find one individual rifle to be more accurate than another, but overall it's a wash.

that is why I asked... I too wish there was gopher...

EDIT : with my luck and the silly mnr northern ontario rules it would be considered fur bearing no doubt, and trapping only species.

I hear you. Just got through summer #2 of my buddies sending me reports from Alberta. "ahhh MAN, you should have BEEN here!!! I brought a brick of HMR out today, and ran out of ammo!!!" Green-with-envy. :( So, decided to get serious about a trip out there, mix a little trout fishing in with it. :)
