Savage (Stevens) 340 Scope Mounting Question/Issue

I just picked up a Savage/Stevens 340 30-30. It has no scope mount and I was told I need a side mount base and then another part that screwed to that base. I purchased the parts and then did a trial mock up to see how it would work. I was told from the store i purchased the scope would not sit in line with the receiver and would be offset similar to a top eject. Is anyone familiar with this system. I took everything to a fellow and he does not think it will work....

With the correct Weaver #1 side base and ring mount, it could sit in line with the bore. Weaver does note that there may be a bolt clearance issue, so your info from the LGS could be validated by this.
If the scope's ocular lens bell is the issue, consider a different scope and try your mock up again.
It's surprising how the bolt clearance issue raises it's head and not necessarily on just older rifles.
 
I don't think there is a side base for the 340 that puts the scope above the axis of the bore. I went through that years ago and I'm almost convinced the best way to do it is to set the gun on fire and throw it in the river and buy something with real mounting options.

It's the system made for it and there is no reason why it should not work. Try it, what do you have to lose?
 
The only issue I have seen scoping a 340 is that some ring spacings don't give much in the way of forward and back options which can result in eye relief problems.
All the mounts I've seen put the scope overbore; have not encountered any that offset the sight to the left.

As far as windage adjustment is concerned when a scope is offset to the left goes... If the scope is offset 1" left, zero the rifle so that the MPI is 1" right. Line of sight and bore axis are parallel. Otherwise, the bore axis and line of sight will only converge at only one range, and there will be a different lateral error at all other ranges.

Had one on a 340/.222 with no issues.As well have one on a Cooey 60 with the #2 base also over the bore..........Harold
 
The fellow I brought it to drill and tap feels very strongly that it will not work. I will ask him to review the pics posted earlier. Looks like it goes to me...

Thanks for posting this. Do you recall the part number for the Weaver base? Maybe i was sold the wrong one. Yours is perfect.

I think you bought the wrong mounts, the weaver mounts should sit the scope perfectly in line with the bore, no offset
