my father just had his model 200 223 to the range today and fired a box of shells from it // it has the internal mag and is stock rather then the scope on the last 2 shots from the mag the bolt would just glide over the top of the shell and sometimes it would bind the shell up sideways .... just woundering what can be causing this and how do we fix it

Is it possible he didn't bring the bolt back all the way?? That would explain the bolt not grabbing the cartridge, as it would still be on top of it and not behind the rim. Not sure on the shell binding problem though.....

My Savage 111 in .270 Win. used to do that fairly regularly.
My gunsmith discovered that the Winchester super X shells I got at wal mart were the cause.
They would "bind" inside the mag and not get pushed up far enough for the bolt face to catch them.
I switched brands of cartridges and no more problem's.

Part of having a push fed rifle I believe. Ensure rounds are firmly set to the back on the mag and try a slow, but deliberate cycling of the action. Should be able to reduce the issue with practice.

Alternately, check to see if the parts are all where they should be. The mag should just have contact with the bolt head when cycling. If it is pushing the mag down, or if there is too much gap you will need to adjust the mag in the stock. Suggest you look at this while slowly cycling the action, empty gun of course.

Final straw could be to open up the lips of the mag a teeny bit to allow the shells to ride a bit higher.

Hope this helps.

I have a Stevens 200 .223 which I just had re-barreled that is doing the exact same thing. I figured I may have to replace the mag spring and/or follower. I'll be watching this thread for sure...

That occasionally happens to my .223 Stevens, which was one of the early models purchased in 2005 (I think the mag well is slightly different on the newer ones, at least it is on my .308). A recall a few years ago reading that Savage was offering a stronger magwell spring to those who asked for it on account of this problem but never got down to following up on it. That avenue might be worth looking into just in case it's still an option.

Otherwise it's a great rifle, and my newer .308 model works without a hiccup.

I restocked my daughter's Steven's 200 and ended up with the same problem.
This has been discussed numerous times before.
What I found on our rifle is there is a vertical guide plate at the back of the
mag well.
This determines the position of the case head. If it's bent too far rearward, it
won't let the bolt hook the rear of the cartridge coming up next.
I took it out and bent it to fit.
Best to remove it to make the adjustment.
If you stare at it long enough, you will see what I am refering to.
As always, barrel control and do this in a safe area.
Preferably out in the bush...........................

as kamlooky said... i have the same gun, restocked it into a boyds, then had the same issue. I simply shimmed the mag (bottom rear) and it has worked perfect ever since!
Try a popsicle stick as a shim.
Its all about the angle...
