Hey all, picked up a Savage 340 from EE a little while ago and I had a few questions... Firstly, does anyone have an idea to when it was produced? The serial number is 13965 and it's marked as "Savage Super Sporter". There is also the words "Hi-Pressure steel - proof tested". It's in a 30-30 with a 3 round magazine. There is also a safety right beside the bolt.

Oh and one more question, how would I install a scope mount? I haven't been too successful looking online (but maybe I'm not looking in the right place!)

Here is a link for an album with a bunch of pictures.

Thanks again all, any help is appreciated!

I believe you actually have a model 45 "super sporter" in your hands. They were made from 1928 to about 1940 (mag release in the stock starting in 1936). So yours would be '28 to '35.
It should have a couple of screw holes at the back of the receiver for an aperture sight. As far as a scope mount, you'll be drilling and tapping the receiver.

I personally wouldn't have a scope mounted, it's not a very common rifle.

sweet ;ittel bush gun for deer moose and even bears .no scope for you unless you want to drill the side of the recever and put a side mount on it .I would leave it as is and enjoy her for what she is .a great little bush gun .enjoy Dutch

I agree with the not drilling part. Also keep in mind that the magazines are not so easy to find any more, so keep your eyes open at gun shows.

It be a shame to drill an old survivor like that one. Better off just to buy another rifle ready for a scope.

Hey all, thanks a bunch for all the great feedback! I think I'll take everyones advice and leave it scope free. Time to buy anther rifle.
