You talked about a "Shilen barrel" care to go into where these are purchased, how much, installing one, etc?
I am a Shilen dealer and can supply anything you want. McGowen barrels are now available too. Also various accessories for the Savage platform too.
Thanks for all the kind comments. It was a lot of fun to build and kept winter from being so cold.
If you look at one of the pics in the build, you can see a stub of wood epoxied to the stock where the grip would be. A combo of glue and screw and it is nice and solid. Bondo on the outside fairs it all nicely together.
Due to exchange rate and such, the build in Canada will cost a bit more then posted but still way less then some factory rifles. The barrel as shown would be $455 (SS Select match) then the small cost to have it profiled. If you went CM, it would be $375. Pretty economical.
I can help others with the bolt timing, barrel swap and bedding. I now tune Savage/Stevens as a service.
Adj the bolt timing is changing the workings of the bolt so lift and much easier, smoother and lighter. Most factory rifles have a stiff initial lift, followed by a pretty big clunk as the hammer is cocked. All this is usually heavy enough that cycling from the shoulder is far from easy.
When I am done, most actions can be two finger cycled from the shoulder.
It is hard to see but there is a bit of bedding supporting the barrel nut. Because of the short barrel, I didn't need to build up much. You can definitely bed under the nut and swap barrels. All you need to do is smooth the lumps (where the slots on the nut would have been ) flush with the rest of the bedding and you can change away without issue.
Bucky, hopefully, you can make your way back into the valley and we can go do somemore plinking. Although you already have an amazing place to shoot.
LH, back in the valley next week. Give me a shout and I will trade you computer advice for shooting
