Savage Tactical Rifle Build

Great article and a fantastic looking rifle!
How is the grip held to the original stock? More than just bondo I presume?
I've got the orginal stock from my FP10 - I may try to follow your lead!

Mysticplayer, great write up and thanks for letting me shoot the rifle - if a newb can hit targets at ~1000 yards with it you know the rifle is good.

How do you adjust the bolt timing - are you reducing the lift needed to release the lugs?

Drache, given Mysticplayer's signature, my guess is he can provide you with the Shilen barrel - these screw on, just need a couple dollar tool for the barrel nut. The article mentions total parts at ~800 of which the rifle is ~400 so my guess is the barrel is ~350. He also has the Burris rings & an assortment of ammo.

Great article Jerry. I had already decided to order a barrel from you at some point in the future. I might just do it sooner now.

One question, might be obvious to some but not me.
I notice you did not have bedding support around the barrel nut. Is this so you can swap out barrels. Would swapping barrels effect the bedding if support had been provided to this area?

thanks,
warren

I am in love with these threads. I did a bondo/wood job on a stevens 200 in 7mmRM stock and it came out pretty good too. Not as cool as that one tho.

Again I figured the total with optics (Bushy 3200 5-15x40)was around $1000. Mind you I had a Rifle Basix trigger given to me and the barrel was a new Savage Take off from a Savage 110 LE when they had them in 7mmRM. So I cheaped out but it still shoots .5 at 100 and 5 inches at 650 yd.

Here is a link if anyone wants to see it again

Jerry's is waaayyy cooler tho. Makes me want to start another project. I'd like a tactical 223 like that for slaying gophers next year.

I can only see one ugly thing about this gun and write up........

Is the guy behind the gun.:D:D:D

Just kidding Jerry, I had first hand expireance seeing you pull the trigger, and it may not be a savage I buy next but it will be a 223 of some kind.
Well done

Cheers

You talked about a "Shilen barrel" care to go into where these are purchased, how much, installing one, etc?

I am a Shilen dealer and can supply anything you want. McGowen barrels are now available too. Also various accessories for the Savage platform too.

Thanks for all the kind comments. It was a lot of fun to build and kept winter from being so cold.

If you look at one of the pics in the build, you can see a stub of wood epoxied to the stock where the grip would be. A combo of glue and screw and it is nice and solid. Bondo on the outside fairs it all nicely together.

Due to exchange rate and such, the build in Canada will cost a bit more then posted but still way less then some factory rifles. The barrel as shown would be $455 (SS Select match) then the small cost to have it profiled. If you went CM, it would be $375. Pretty economical.

I can help others with the bolt timing, barrel swap and bedding. I now tune Savage/Stevens as a service.

Adj the bolt timing is changing the workings of the bolt so lift and much easier, smoother and lighter. Most factory rifles have a stiff initial lift, followed by a pretty big clunk as the hammer is cocked. All this is usually heavy enough that cycling from the shoulder is far from easy.

When I am done, most actions can be two finger cycled from the shoulder.

It is hard to see but there is a bit of bedding supporting the barrel nut. Because of the short barrel, I didn't need to build up much. You can definitely bed under the nut and swap barrels. All you need to do is smooth the lumps (where the slots on the nut would have been ) flush with the rest of the bedding and you can change away without issue.

Bucky, hopefully, you can make your way back into the valley and we can go do somemore plinking. Although you already have an amazing place to shoot.

LH, back in the valley next week. Give me a shout and I will trade you computer advice for shooting :D
