I was honored to receive a deceased friend's rifle a few days ago. It is a takedown model Savage 99, serial number 2048xx and it is in remarkable good shape. It is chambered in 22 high power, a cartridge I know little about. The full box of shells was made by Remington Arms, UMC and is stamped ""non corrosive, mushroom bullets"
I know he harvesred a number of deer with it around Ladysmith, back in the day.

Can anyone tell me when it was made?

DOM was 1918 or 1919. The .22 Savage Hi-Power, aka "The Imp" was created by necking the .25-35 Winchester to use .227" bullets. That's not a typo.
Sellier & Bellot make ammo in Europe, 5.6X51R, IIRC, and it's sold in North America. Hornady still makes 70-grain .227" bullets. I have heard it's exasperating to handload.
I would shoot small deer with one, at ranges under a hundred yards.

My great uncle even shot elk with the 22 high power. My grandfather got a moose with one also. But dad also mentioned how many blown up deer they also had also.
