So I am fairly new to the discussion boards but grew up shooting for 35 odd years and really am interested in getting into some of the competitive target classes.
Lurking on the board has given me a chance to pick up info that I never dreamed of. Thanks to all that contribute in a positive way.
That being said I think I have finally decided on a brand to get me into the game. I have struggled narrowing it down from a remington 700 to a Tikka T3 and think I have finally settled on a Savage built gun chambered in 223.(Thanks Mystic)as a starting point.
I know this is not everyone's gun of choice but I think it is a great way to get going.
My question is this.
On Savages website they have a video of the accustock treatment they offer but none of the target style rifles come with this feature, why not. It is supposed to be better than glass bedding so why not have it available on target models, or is this something that you can order on any model.

I am looking at the Model 12 F/TR in 223 mostly because it seems to be the only model in the target class available in 223. The Benchrest model and F Class are chambered in 6.5x284 Norma, 308 Win. or 6 Norma Br..

The other model that I am considering is the 25 LV-T, not sure though if the model 12 F/TR will be a better choice. The idea of a single shot (12F/TR) is fine.

Any comments on the models above would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Of the two models that you have listed, they have different twist rates and barrel lengths.

F/TR - 1:7" and 30" of barrel
25 LV-T - 1:9" and 24" of barrel

Do you have a maximum applied range in mind? I am sure others will chime in here with specific performance values, but in general guys shooting competitions are using the heavier bullets (80gr +, and pick your flavour) which require the faster twist rate. On that point the F/TR satisfies the requirement, and the 30 inch barrel should give a little more velocity.

Thank you . I think the faster twist will give me the best options. Hopefully I can start here and build up from this(F/TR)

I saw on a previous forum that I cannot find now, a bolt action rifle(I believe it was a savage) that was a right hand bold but you loaded from the left.I assume this a special order unit.

AFAIK the accustock system is only availabe on their rifles with their own plastic stocks -it is an inbedded aluminum chassis in the stock. Any of their rifles with wood, lam, or outside savage stock (ie. HS Presicion) does not have the accustock system. the exception is the 10 BAS/BAT

Assume you want to shoot F TR. If so, build up a rifle for yourself. You will end up paying similar money but get a competitive rifle. The Factory rifles are nice and can shoot well but that is a crap shoot - factory barrels are a huge variable.

If your goal is to shoot in a production class, odds are the F class Savages and semi custom target models can't shoot there.

I am working on a Savage VLP in 223 as a factory class rig per BC rules. Will offer it out as a demo for those who want to try competing but don't have a rifle. Test group today was 3/8" at 200yds for 3rds. Sure showing promise - just need to blast a bunch more rounds down range to confirm the performance.

The all up weight of this rifle will be 12ish lbs to suit the rules.

If you need help setting up a F TR rifle, give me a PM or email. For F class, go right bolt, right port if you are right handed. Keeps you from needing to roll back and forth to load.

RB, LP is for bench shooting.

The accustock is a great idea ruined by how they actually manf it. This chassis definitely needs bedding.
