Savage Trophy Hunter 11 .308 fail **update**

Aftermarket stock wont help. They send a stock that uses the old hardware and trigger guards... If the thread is stripped he needs new hardware. Hopefully the threads on the action are not messed up.

It is the screw hole in the stock that is stripped. The trigger guard is screwed into the stock. So the trigger guard and related hardware seems ok. Unless I missed something there.

Eh not something I would want to do...

You mention both where loose... Did you strip the rifle when you purchased? (hopefully but im guessing not) You would have noticed things had not been right then...

Long shot but maybe you have the screws in the wrong holes... one IS shorter then the other. So you can completely thread the front but the stock is still loose and the back wont thread and will feel "stripped" some miracle is stayed in the stock.

You are right, I did not strip it when new. My bad there.

The screws, if reversed, were done that way at the factory, because I haven’t had the front screw out of the gun. Only the rear one to visually confirm the stripped-ness.

Also, what are your misgivings about the epoxy solution?

Your reading it wrong. His action screws are fine. The rear screw in the trigger guard that only threads into the stock is stripped.

Another easy solution is to put a small piece of solid copper wire (#14 should work) in the stripped screw hole. Should be able to snug it up with that. Not a permanent solution but works in a pinch.

Just a (very) late update.
I used epoxy in the stock screw hole, tightened everything on the rifle, and shot my first deer with it last November.
It’s in fine working order.

Thanks to all who offered assistance.

The first thing to do with a new or pre owned gun is take it out of stock and give it a cleaning, check barrel clearance to make sure it's not rubbing, clean off any packing oil and re assemble, making sure to tourque the screws to proper tourque specs so that issues such as these don't arise. This is after finding loose screws on a rifle after trying to get it to shoot, now I don't have those issues
