Hey guys. I'm looking at getting into serious target shooting. Im staying in the 22lr calibre for now to hone my shooting skills before jumping into something larger for long range. Any thoughts on the savage TRR-SR or the cz 455 American as my next step into the target shooting world? Looking to shoot at max range about 150-200yds

I have a Savage Mk II FV that I put into a Boyds stock (identical to the TRR-SR stock) for less money all up. The FV barrel isn't fluted, but I think is otherwise identical. The extra rails on the TRR-SR are probably not going to do anything for you other than add weight, and really, a muzzle brake is unnecessary on a .22LR. If the TR is available cheaper I would say go that way all else equal.

Accuracy on mine is great - at 100 yards I'm sub MOA with CCI Std Velocity, which is pretty inexpensive. Each rifle will be different though...

Have briefly handled a CZ and they are much nicer. The 455 American has a thinner barrel, so expect it to heat up and wander quicker than a heavier barrel in longer strings of fire. An apples to apples comparison would be the TRR-SR to the 455 Varmint.

Savages are, in my experience (rimfire and centrefire), capable of comparable accuracy to other higher end offerings, but lack refinement. I had a Savage 308 Win and moved to Tikka and haven't looked back. If you think that you will prefer a smoother action, better made etc, then skip the Savage.

The 455 is the “problem child” of the CZ line, you pay your money and take your chances. If you can find a varmint 452, that’s the sweet one. Poke around there were still a few for sale new being offered. I have 13 cz in the safe and it’s the 455’s that end up going out the door,no matter how much tinkering gets done on them. A 453 with the set trigger system is a bonus but those are extremely rare(new) There are trigger kits offered on gunnutz that will able you to get the trigger pull down to ounces for bench work. Bluntly put no Savage ,yes CZ.

I have a Savage mkII in a same Boyds stock. It's a good budget plinker, but I'm closer to 1" @ 50m with CCI SV. I haven't gotten back to testing with real expensive ammo. Jadam is correct, Savages tend to shoot reasonable well, but lack refinement. For myself, someday I'd like to sell my Savage and get a CZ 452 or 455 as it's a nicer rifle that could be re-barreled if I get back into shooting a lot of 22LR.

Great replies guys. So much to learn lol. Now I notice you guys mentioned using standard velocity for your target rifles. Is using SV better than high velocity in target shooting ?

After a hard look at the trr sr, i found an opportunity for a used TR that I couldnt pass and havent looked back. The rails are completely unnecessary. The threaded barrel is nice, fingers crossed for legal suppressors, but it too is unnecessary.

A lot of the new trr sr only come with a 16" barrel, which is disappointing. Especially if you wamt to reach out past 100m, get the longest barrel you can find.

My rig with a bushnell 3-12 AR optic got my name on the 1/2" @50m thread. Was ringing the 8' gomg like a dinner bell at 250m in dead wind. I am sure the CZs are good too but you won't regret the savage.

I only use subsonic SV for long ranges. At 25 and less it probably doesnt matter much, but longer out quality matters more than velocity.

I use Eley target for all my .22 rifles and RWS MATCh if I am trying to impress

My Savage Mk2 FV does that on average with its proper ammo @ 100m

Those are really nice groupings. Mine are super tight aswell with my stock Ruger 10/22 but I'm only able to shoot at 30yrds at my range. I just recently watched a review on the savage B-22 fv Sr. It's got me even more conflicted. So many toys, never enough $$$ lol

I love my CZ452 Varmint in 22lr. See if you can meet some shooters with both at your local Range.
Be polite and I am pretty sure people will let you try a mag or two. Have some cci standard on hand just in case.

I grabbed a CZ 452 Varmint from Bullseye London. Beautiful gun. I have a Nikon Prostaff Rimfire and CZ rings on there. I don't know the technical term, but at 25 yards, I can get a group tighter than the circumfrence of a dime.
