I have a Savage bolt rifle with round receiver. I installed 2-piece Leupold mounts and Ruger branded Leupold style dovetail front / windage screws rear rings.

The front ring sits slightly lower than the rear and it would destroy the scope if I tightened them. Has anyone seen this problem?

I would consider trying out a cheap set of weavers and seeing if they’re even then. That will tell you if it’s your bases or the receiver.

These would be the correct bases:

Maybe try the proper leupold matching rings?

Are the tops of the bases aligned when you check with a straight edge?

You do have the Windage adjustable base to the rear of the action right?

Slightly lower- meaning about 1mm lower.

So maybe they shipped a round receiver rear base and a square receiver front base? I'll return them. The rings are equal height in the measurement above the bases.

Correctly installed pairs of bases should form a "dead flat" plane on their top edges. Check with a metal straight edge - front to back and then back to front - should be "exact", not merely "close". With older sporting rifles or milsurps, not unusual at all to have to shim one or another base to get the two of them "dead flat" front to back and side to side - even with "correct" bases - there is (or at least was) considerable variation in finished dimensions of the receivers - came from the "hand polishing" step, I was told - also, "home handy man" grinding and filing on some. You have discovered why a few swipes with a lapping bar and some lapping compound is often used in the rings - misalignments show up right away.

I had this problem. Most all Savages have this issue. Easiest fix is to use Burris Signature zee rings. They mitigate most alignment issues. Worked for my 10ml2. Lapping/shimming is time consuming and probably won't work as well anyway.

This is more than a few thousands difference that can be fixed with shimming. There's definitely a problem with the bases being matched I think.

Check the rings, just in case. A friend had a similar issue but it turned out that he did not realize the rings he bought were mixed up in the package. Two different heights.

On another rifle, I had to shim one of the bases as there was a definite difference in height.
