Savage vs remington

I would buy the better product no matter where it was made.

If the biggest pos was made in Canada would you still buy it if a better product was made someplace else?

I agree that I care more about the quality and value of something I'm purchasing over where it was made. That being said I'd rather support canadian made if I can. It just so happens that I am a fan of savage rifles so that helped make the decision easier.

Save up another 50$ and get a used cz 455 or 452 put a yo Dave trigger kit on it and you will have a gun you will never want to get rid of. Buy it once buy it for life and come shoot some small bore silhouette

The 455 or 452 are life long guns you could put in your will . . . not that we want to go there.
My American and Varmint are both capable of MOA but have a YoDave trigger kit, reshaped firing pins and pillar bedded.

Testing ammo at 100 yards produced 4 - 10 shot groups that averaged 1.70 with a 10/22 sporter.

The $40 scope that is installed on a combo package is just that . . . Cabela's probably does not have a $40 scope. It may be okay for a starter but won't take much adjustment before you will see the errors of a marketing strategy.

With the low cost of 22 ammo you can have a great learning experience. They are like potato chips . . . you can't stop at one!

Exactly. I have had 5 or 6 savage rimfires (can't remember as they were never that great) was happy to sell them all and get some cz452's they are in a different league then a savage that is for sure.

^i would agree, but I would like the opportunity to shoot one of the newer B22s. I can't imagine the built quality is much better (though I have an open mind about it) but the design appears to be...if only improved ergonomics. There was just a pile of room for improvement in that regard, 10 minutes with a synthetic Mark II stock would show you that quick! :) I used to feel very differently about Savage centerfires, only because my .223 has been an absolute laser beam. Build quality was/is rough compared to a comparably priced Remington 700...but boy, does it shoot! That prompted me to get a Savage 10 Predator in .243 that ended-up having headspace issues right out of the gate. (new gun too)

So, as the "new gear" budget seems to shrink every year along with the amount of time I have to actually GO shooting...the desire to compromise shrinks too. For that reason, "fewer/better guns is sort of where my sensibilities are heading. Based on having 2 Savage centerfires and at least 5 Savage rimfires in the last 7-8 years or so, I'm not sure Savage will play a very big role in my life going forward. The .223 stays though. Allot of groundhogs have been sent to the great hay field in the sky thanks to that thing.

Not sure about the new model 10's but the 11's now use an axis mag. Real downgrade on their part.

I got a Savage B22 Heavy Barrel and fully endorse it.
- It's Made in Canada
- Bolt action = Every shot counts = Less money spent on ammo (It's 22's...but still... I'm not made of money)
- Magazine is not as good as the 10/22, but it feeds flawlessly (10 round flush mount, something the CZ does not have)
- The polymer stock is very ergonomic
- Accutrigger is fantastic
- It was priced right (Poor man's CZ)

The B22 made me not want a CZ 452/455 anymore. But that's just for me.

Great advice my best shooter is used and had a trigger job.. would not part with it

Well, I have a 597 AAC and I love it!
It came with an adult size stock (unlike Ruger) and was super reliable in stock form.
Then, I did the usual mods as per RimfireCentral.
Polished the guide rods, got a Volquartsen hammer and extractor as well as the MCARBO spring kit.
I now have a hair pull trigger tack driver.
30 round Remington brand mags are great once broken in cleaned out with a 12ga bore snake.
I have a 4-16X Hawk scope with Warn rings and a bipod.
I could not be happier with a semi.
Next purchase will be a Savage Mark II FV SR since I also like bolt guns.

I’ve got a pair of 597’s and they shoot great ... now. I changed out the hammers for the VQ ones and did a little polishing as well as checking the torque on the bolt guides. I’ve had very little problems with the 30 rd mags and none once I broke them in. Both shoot accurately. I also have a few Savage bolt 22’s that shoot well too! If you want to shoot subsonic ammo, stick with the bolt action. That said, I’ve had excellent results so far this grouse season with the 597 and Browning BPR hollow point ammo, the 1400 fps stuff in the plastic boxes
