Savage vs Vanguard

Hey, my brother-in-law is a die hard savage fan and I am looking at getting a vanguard and he says that I am wasting my money. For the price and accuracy I should get a savage. Can anyone set me straight here. It seems that there is a lot of hype around the weatherby (Vanguard) name - is it all that or for the price should I go with the savage?

bah I have a savage predator .22-250 and my buddy has a WBY Vanguard .22-250 and that thing shoots just as well as mine. My best group to date is 5 shots in .82'' and his is 5 shots in .84'' both shooting reloads. The trigger is nicer on the savage but I find the action nicer on the Vanguard.

I say buy a Vanguard put a Timney trigger in it and go hunting or buy a Savage leave it alone and go hunting both will shoot equally as well.
 
I'm with icon. I'm a savage fan too, but I'm sure a vangaurd is a decent rifle and you'll have no problem making kills with it.

I'm not a hunter, I"m a paper puncher, so I'm generally looking for the best accuracy and nothing else matters.

A hunter like you is also going to look at feel, carry, contour and overall impression, nes pas?
 
My dad has a vangaurd in 30-06 and he was looking at the savage in 30-06. My dad chose the vangaurd because it has a 24" barrel were as the savage has a 22" barrel. I also handled both and the vangaurd had the better trigger and felt nicer over all to me. The savage being $100 less is also something to take in to consider. The savage and vangaurd both shoot about the same. If there is any differences my dad and I couldn't tell. The groups on both were about 1.5" without hand loads. With handloads my dads rifle is doing about .75".

When is comes down to it handle both and see what one you like because both are good rifles.
 
Go out and see what feels best in your hands. A perfect rifle for me may not be the perfect rifle for you. There might be some little features that one rifle has over the other that suits your needs. I was actually looking at the Weatherby Vanguards and The Savage 114 American Hunter and one thing that I liked about the savage is the accutrigger.

So what I'm trying to say is that neither rifle is a slouch and will get the job done. YOUR paying for the rifle so buy what YOU want. Your buddy isn't going to stop hunting with you because you didn't buy the rifle he wanted.

I have shot both. I own a Weatherby Vanguard Sub-MOA in 22-250 as well as one in 300WSM. In my opinion the weatherby is the better gun. Sure the accutrigger is nice, but you may as well take the factory stock off the savage and throw it in the garbage! (composite stock). Someone once told me savage's are for savage's! I am not going to say that I would never own another one, but, for the money the sub-moa is the better gun. I get better accuracy out of a hunting weight rifle than I did out of my heavy barrel savage. The one leg up that savage has is the option of a clip, which I do miss. Other than that Weatherby all the way!
 
I have a Savage and love it, my varminting buddy has a Vangaurd (bought at WSS in Letbridge) and they both are equally great.

I would say try each one for feel and decide upon the one that seems to have the most natural feel for YOU.

Especially if you are going to be doing the majority of shooting offhand. Even if another gun is capable of great benchrest accuracy you will do better with a gun that fits you for real world deer hunting.

Now if you are shooting from a rest like varminting I would give the edge to the Savage as you can easily swap in a aftermarket barrel, change the bolt face and the Accutrigger is pretty decent for a factory trigger.

Either way you will not go wrong.
 
Comparing the Savage/accutrigger with a Vanguard....you will probably need a trigger for your Vanguard, but the accuracy potential is very similar in both flavors. Even the non-sub moa Vanguards are plenty accurate, in my experience. The Synthetic stocks on both leave a bit to be desired, so that is a wash. Buy what feels best to you. Regards, Eagleye.

i got a vangard 257 wby like it o lot but i wasent getting the groups i wanted so i got it pillar bedded and triger tunned made the worldof diffrence i get easey 0.5 moa for i little bit more money it was worth it but savage is also a good rifle
