Savage walking varminter

The only thing I dislike about the gun is the bolt lift. I've been practicing lifting using leverage against the top of the rifle but it's tough with one hand. It's either that are bury my face into the rifle to hold it down. Unless I use two hands but that's a pita while laying down.

I have a 1:9 and shoot 36-77gr with no problems at all.

I didn't say you can't shoot lighter bullets out of a 1:9 barrel. I was replying to a blanket statement that 1:9 is better. Spinning a bullet faster than strictly necessary comes at the cost of precision. Look it up - it makes for some good reading.

I guess quarter inch groups with 36-40 gr bullets isnt precise enough eh. No need to look anything Up I know from my load development that it works just fine.

Sorry for not posting a pic of the groups but I've got an assortment of 50 gr. max loads ready to go and I'll try to post some pics next time out.

Finally got out to the range and tried the 50 gr loads. I fired six three shot groups on six targets. Not the best day for groups but I did my best. Groups ranged from about .5" to 1" . I then plotted the points of impact on a a sheet of paper and they all fell into a .75" circle.

I am very happy with the results. All eighteen shots with six different loads fell into about a 1" circle. The tricky part now is to determine which load to pick.

The bolt stiffness has resolved itself and the rifle loads and extracts nicely. For a lower end rifle I think this one is going to stay. Next trip out I'll try 300 yards but am expecting the gun to perform well.

I've got the thumbhole version in .204. Great rifle, shoots under a half inch with blitz kings no problem.

OP I have to ask. How difficult is the bolt to open on yours after you fire or dry fire? Just the bolt lift, not the sliding. Because mine is considerably more difficult than any other bolt I've had.

I believe they are #### on open as opposed to #### on close like most centre fires
