Savage, when did it go from the gun to meh?

I'm an old fella.
I've had all types of rifles.
I've had savage rifles for over 50 years.
I've taken moose, bears, wolves, and everything in between
no problems at all. The only savage that was [no good].
Was a 22/20 gauge.
I could not hit anything with both, [gone for sale[

I currently have two Savage CFs and a Savage 22. All are left hand models. Had a third older short action with detachable mag chambered for 308 but couldn't get it to shoot so I rebarreled it to 243 and then it shot well and I gave it to a daughter-in-law. I have a stainless and plastic long action which I rebarreled to 280 Rem and which I use whenever the weather is nasty and which shoots well, and a short action tactical chambered in 223 which is very accurate. The 22 is also pleasantly accurate. I have never experienced any loading. firing,or ejection issues in the many years I have owned these rifles. I own a LH Remington 700 in 7mm mag, a LH Winchester model 70 classic also in 7mm, a Browning A-Bolt II in 280 Rem, and a custom LH Mauser also in 280 Rem. All of these rifles are accurate and trouble free. I am not embarrassed to take the Savages anywhere because they are good honest hunting rifles that get the job done every time. In my opinion, anyone who says otherwise is either a gun snob or else woefully uninformed.

I cannot say about all Savage rifles, but my 10TR, At-one, and BTVS are all-around perfect (my personal opinion, of course:).

I have a model 14 American classic or whatever you call it. Acquired it on trade. It’s very accurate and not a bad design, except the middle screw that holds the front of the trigger guard is a poor design. The wood it sets into has broke out repeatedly. Also went to put a synthetic stock on and low and behold savage changed the size of the recoil lug on newer production 110 and 10. I kinda lost interest after that fiasco.

When the 99’s went from lever to tang safety’s.

I can’t really say anything about the newer ones as the 14Classic in .250 and the three 125th anniversary ones in .250, .300 and 6.5cr haven’t been shot, but the older 75-78’ 112 J in .243 will take the tacks out of my buddy’s target.

I wanted to buy a Savage 110 Elite in 223. After checking YouTube reviews and written reviews, I just couldn't do it. The only issue was a cheap extractor. If using that part is helping make them profitable, it won't be with me.

I have nothing against Savage rifles.
My brother has a LH 110 in 30/06 and it's the only rifle he's ever hunted with.

I don't like the looks of them so I've never owned one
Much like a Pontiac Aztek, I'm sure they're dependable but not much to look at.

So many options today... 18 to 20 years ago if you wanted a factory "precision rifle" you had rem and savage. I think it was clear savage had them beat on accuracy out of the box and got that reputation, today savage has been long left behind.

Hey, since we’re talking savage, anybody know where I could find an aftermarket stock, lightweight,Carbon? , maybe in a black color?
I’m Canada? Two to three hundred range.
Savage 110 ultralight

Make sure the recoil lug will fit whatever you find. I got burned on that. Just measure your action to the new stock and make sure it’s all good before you commit.

LA , as long as the two bolt pattern / distance is the same , right?

Yes the distance between bolts is the same. The recoil lug size was changed at some point and the new stocks are not compatible with actions like the one I have.

Had a pre-Accutrigger Savage 111 package rifle in .30-06 as my old truck gun. It did the job.

I have one of those also, $400 all in at SIR Boxing day sale. I got it so I could retire my beautifully stocked Remington 6.5 x 55 Classic and Sako .30-06 Fibreclass, fantastic rifles, but I got tired of babying them in hunting season. So now they are safe queens.

With factory ammo, the Savage shot a little better than the Sako and as good as the Remington, just under MOA at 100. Detachable mag, and who cares what happens to it?

I have owned a few Savage model 16's, still do, they were all deadly accurate out of the box and function as they should.

Not sure why some people have a problem with them.

I'm not fan of plastic stocked rifles anyway but the Accustock feels as good as most other plastic rifle stocks I've held.

I also know and have seen, expensive Christenson Arms and Fierce rifles that can't shoot straight.

Go figure?
