I am thinking of getting the nephew who is 12 a savage youth hunter,he is not that big of kid ,just wondering how much more recoil the 7-08 has over the 243.

7-08 has quite a bit more recoil than the 243 in a little youth gun and especially for a child. I have a Remington youth in 7-08 and was surprised at the amount recoil WAY to much for a little kid. Recoil is also very snappy with the short length of pull and short bbl.

If you just want to buy ammo and shoot the thing without farting around the 243 is much better. If you want to reload for it and make some low recoil rounds there is nothing wrong with the 7-08

my oldest son started off with a 243 at age 12. He didn't like the recoil from my mod 94 30-30, so I bought him a Browning Micro Medallion in 243. He loved that gun for years and did head shots on Deer.

The 7mm08 is a fantastic round but I would still go with the 243, my friend was in the same situation with his 12 year old so I made a project out of it for myself and researched the hell out of it. In the end I went to every store that sells ammo in Edmonton from walmart to Cabelas to look at ammo availability and price, and the 243 was cheaper, more available, and had a far greater selection of brand names and grains. Even Cabelas and WS only had 2 different kinds of 7mm08 on the self, so if you want the boy to shoot more and not have to travel far for ammo or want to keep ammo cost down go for the 243, Some might argue that the 7mm08 has more "stopping power" or has " better ballistics" and I'm sure they are all probably correct but the 243 is no slouch and has proven itself capable as a deer cartridge and if gets the boy out shooting and he likes it do to the recoil or lack their of then that's what matters. My friends boy loves his 243 and he is one hell of a shot with it also!

"...not that big of a kid..." Doesn't matter. It's the kid that makes the difference. Ok, and the fit of the rifle. Mind you, that's not a big deal either. Had a short statured(5 ft nothing) female Army Cadet who could out shoot most of the knuckle dragging guys with either a 12ish pound C1A1 or a No. 4 Lee-Enfield.
Where you are may matter. If you're in Ontario and plan on hunting in certain parts of Southern Ont, a 7mm is out. Doesn't apply elsewhere.

Both cartridges have their advantages, and if you handload, you can hold down the blast and the recoil to manageable levels for a novice . If you only have access to factory ammo, I'd probably opt for the .243.
