These sweet looking critters are running out of logs to sun baith on along the shore line, and inlets :( An effort should be made to make it easier for them to get the last remaining Salmon in the area , what ya think? :D

Those soft brown eyes, stareing up at you from below the gate of the local salmon hatchery saying, "throw me a Tum's, would ya."

Nothing like hiking into my favourite steelheading hole, 20 miles from the nearest tide water and finding Harbour seals chasing the last steel remaining fish in the river.

Well the island is a big place. Up here there are very healthy stocks of all the sea mamals that should be here. I personally don't see any imbalances of any particular species that is hurting other species'.

South Island - different story. Some sea mamals, particularly harbour seals are at numbers two and three fold over what they were several decades ago. It seems that they have done well in all habitats including those polluted with too many people and boats and have thrived as their predetors (transient Orcas) will not hunt them in such habitat. And, no one shoots them any more.

Several years ago there was actually a cull in the Courtenay/Puntledge river as fish stocks (particularly chinook salmon) were on the verge of extinction. Yet the river was plugged solid with seals trying to kill the last returning spawners. Much wailing, arm swinging and kayeying by the shrubbies and greenies but the cull proceeded.

In the last few years the Puntledge river sees a constant rise in salmon returns:cool:

As humans we have changed the natural enviroment more than any other influence. I think we have some responsibility to cull seals, wolves and other preditors (as we do) when science backs up the decision.

Perfect. You can drive the homeless to the seal roast in your bio-diesel van, then hand out sealskin hats and mittens. As long as you make sure at least one of the homeless is a transgender native, you'll have all the do-gooder groups except PETA covered.
 
One species relies on the next for survival. Take one out of the equation and the consequences could be catastrophic. Man too is part of the food chain.

It sure would be aweful, having Salmon to catch again in the Georgia Straight . I realy like the ones you see swimming along with a bennie on their heads, antenna attached:D Those must be in a special program to help save them.

Could that be because the remote aquaculture sights are inhabited by bored, armed teenagers.;)

I was talking to an old time Island resident a few years ago. I asked him why years ago seals etc. weren't such a problem. His frank answer was, "we used to shoot a hell of a lot of them".

Well for what ever reason I will confirm that seals are very reluctant to get close to boats around here. ;) It wasn't that long ago that they were pretty much shot on sight as pests as your friend says. I still see the odd carcass that has been shot now adays too. Maybe fish farms. Maybe commercial fishermen..

seals are intelligent animals-when I was a kid-any seal would stay well clear of any boat-they certainly didn't follow them or slide off the rocks and come over if you picked up your rod or at the sound of a reel running out -there was a $5 bounty on a seals nose.
It got to be so that guides didn't even bother fishing Possession Point off Sooke because the chances of actually landing a salmon was problematic.People paying $300 for a charter don't do so to feed the seals-they can do that back at the cleaning station on the dock.But there was a funny thing-seals which are not normally known to migrate-all of a sudden disappeared.Nobody said anything-but the word was they had ''gone to a better place''.
 
Reminds me of the Chrome Island area off of Hornby about 15 years ago when I lived down there. Trolling along flanked by three or four seals on each side of the boat :rolleyes: I got a hit and the ol Peetz started to sing as a nice spring took a dive. Within a minute the jerk-jerk-jerk of the salmon turned in to a straight pull. ####!!

I took my time and eventually up pops Mr. Seal with about a 20lb spring attached to my line about 100 yards behind the boat. He was laying on his back chomping away on the frish looking right at me. My line was tight; right out of the water running straight to his yap. I 'played' him hoping to at least get my gear back and saaaaanap! he finally wins. To swim away with my salmon and flasher and gear in tow :mad:
