Was haying today, had a doe doing the ol' In and Out on the field between laps. Eventually jumped up her fawn and chased them off the field! Glad the fawn had some legs to run with, instead of being so young as to just huddle down and die!

Had a blue grouse hen getting huffy at the tractor, and chased down her one chick, and chased her off the side of the field before I let the chickie go. Much better than either going through the Mower-conditioner!

I love eating venison, but I feel like such a turd, if one of the littles goes through the conditioner!

Its never a good feeling to run over something unintentionally - and most farmers I know try their best to avoid it. Unfortunately sometimes you just cannot avoid them all.
But sometimes - all the stars align. Its a good day! Congrats!

Heavens no... it wasn't more than 20 or 25 lbs at best, very small, late birth I'm thinking. 16 hour days in the summer... who has time for that?
I never saw the doe at all and only saw the fawn as it rolled out the back of the swather, poor thing must have stood up just before the knife got to it otherwise the machine may have just rolled right over it without hurting it. Trying to watch 30 feet of swather behind a tractor at 6 miles per hour... you can see most things but not all!

Thanks guys, it's a fact of life (and death) around here.

I try to keep a good eye on where the does are hanging about, but the odd one is a surprise.

I figure I am doing pretty good, as the last fawn I hit was a couple or five years back. The first one 'I' hit, all the indication I got was when I looked down at my hand, I had a gobbet of meat stuck to it. Little bugger went through the rollers on the mower, and likely never felt a thing. But I still felt like a right sh!t over it.

Last year, I was chasing down a second fawn of a pair of twins, and by the time I looked up, I had six does homing in on me! I thought I was gonna get my arse kicked hard! LOL!

As soon as I let the little bugs go, all the does vanished back from where they came!

I like eating venison, but I also like to give the buggers a chance to grow up first!

This years first, was seeing a Black Bear out looking for fawns in our fields. Not seem that before.

Great stuff. I was out checking fields on an atv last year, happened to slow down at the right time and scared up mom and 4 baby turkeys right in front of me. If I hadn't slowed for whatever reason, they'd have been lights out. It's funny how different animals invoke different emotions though. On my way home a few nights ago I had to straddle an adult raccoon on the hwy and I swore that thing up and down. I would have felt bad if I had hit it but it would have bothered me much more if I'd hit those baby turkeys.
