Sawed off shotguns, a bad idea that can be fixed

I know this is not exactly the same, but I have one 12 gauge shotgun with a factory 22 inch barrel. With the extra-full turkey choke installed and Super X, 1 1/4 ounce of #4 shot, last fall one bunny fell to it at a ranged distance of 47 meters (51 yards) no problem.

Not such a bad idea indeed. A couple of times I've taken my fixed choke riotguns out hunting.
And I was disappointed in thier weak and large patterns with many big gaps that a few grouse were very happy to experience.

lol.....
I dunno what all the fuss about cut barrels is - this is my favourite bird gun and over the GSP it is deadly on pheasants ( both wild and released) and ruffies!
The barrels have been cut to 26"

I have used cylinder bore short barrels for upland game and ducks with no problems at all. ( guns I have used with the following barrel lengths 18.5" 20" and 25") The lack of choke is compensated by using modern quality ammunition which helps keep a very tight pattern by itself. Other than a few extra fps and slightly tighter patterns at the longer ranges, I find having a variable choke added to my pump action makes little or no discernible difference at reasonable average hunting ranges.

We have all seen barrels cut to the shortest legal length for one reason or another (mostly due to influence from Hollywood I would guess). The problem is that, once cut, the resulting cylinder bore isn't much good for anything other than the imagined need for self defense. As a hunting gun it is close to useless.

"Imagined"? Yup, you can always sweet talk those cute little bears into not mauling you.

Secondly, not everyone needs a HUNTING gun. Some work in the bush and need a TOOL. Your 30" wingfudder "hunting" shotgun is f'n useless when you need both hands to work.

Jesus...it burns....

I think what he meant by "imagined" was the Zom-pocolipse, the Russians, the north Koreans, the Germans....

Put me an the list of guys "interested" in this. I have a cut down Iver Johnson and a polychoke that i would love to make an item. Op, you have a PM.

like people have said;
the difference in FPS from a 12inch to 30inch is 150-180fps, the pattern is dictated by the choke.
the myth about "sawnoff" shotgun cleaning a room is BS. people are just misinformed, have you bean in the woods? having a 4foot long boom stick is very inconvenient and heavy, almost everyone i met dream to have a shorty the rest are just brainwashed by hollywood bank robber myths.

I don't know about this extreme example of differing fps you pose here.

depends on the load weight, quantity of powder and burn rate. its in the 150~ ball park. you wish me to remember each exact number from each of the thousands of articles i see online every year?

if you got time, look it up.

I suppose that a barrel breech could be threaded, and a rifled barrel installed. Firing pin should be bushed to a smaller diameter. I would be very cautious to select a rifle cartridge that produces no more backthrust that the shotgun shell.

slightly OT, but i bought a .25-20 built on a cooey 84 with a williams rear sight here on CGN a few years ago, later sold it too but kinda regret it as it was a great little rifle. no idea who did the work.

Interesting, I've got a Winchester 37A with a 25 inch barrel (sawn off years ago because full choke was useless for rabbits and grouse). It's the go-to gun when the weather is lousy and shots are close.
