sawed off shottie

I was hoping for more of an explanation on this

It would appear to be the superior technique, and I cannot imagine why this method is discouraged?

I'm not down on it, I'm just really curious and would like to learn more

pipe cutter has rollers that make it track straight... on pipe that has parallel walls. Most shotgun barrels taper. So it's gonna walk around doing a very gradual spiral. It would probably work but the cut won't be perfect.

I would lay out the line with masking tape to try and get it close then cut it with hacksaw and true it up with a file.

The right way to do this is on a lathe

Okay so that's 18.5"? I just built a short 1022 and had to order a Factory 10" barrel.

Randy

If you go to short it goes to prohibited... You have to be careful the idea was if you dented a barrel you could hack some off and still have a useable gun for you know repairs. If you go under a certain amount it's illegal you have to be careful when you cut anything down. How ever bolting on other manufactured parts on the other hand is just fine...

I cut down two different shotguns one single and one pump, both 18.5 barrels cut with a pipe cutter (go slow, no tracking problem and no inside crimp) filed inside burr off barrel finished with emery cloth. Painted both with a camo pattern one green one black. As for the hole in the stock really no need to fill you need access for removal, I guess you could use a paintable chalking if you really feel the need to fill. will post pics later. One pic in my avatar.

I've cut many shotguns. I use a pipe cutter if not ribbed. Tape the barrel & go slow. I found for actual use & pattern I liked 20 in. and cut the stock about half way from pistol grip to butt plate. That way you have enough stock to pull against your hip to shot (hold along side not on hip). A Cooey with a pistol grip is an ugly thing to shoot with heavy loads. Many of these guns were for archery hunters as bear back ups. If you are going to paint use a good metal paint not any thing soft (some box liner spray) For the hole leave it or find/make a rubber plug. Wood plugs are harder to remove.

A short shotgun is excellent for grouse hunting but I don't care for a sawed-off that is left with a cylinder bore. Put an adjustable choke on mine (robbed from a parts gun) and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Sorry "Bud" but those are just Stupid. What do you use them for? Mom's dish plates at 5 yards??

Most (all the ones i've worked with) shotgun barrels have most of the taper near the muzzle and chamber areas - they are not tapered evenly over the whole length. I've cut about 12-15 barrels using a pipe cutter and got a square cut every time. It is much more precise than a hacksaw.

Regardless of what method of cutting is used, a first time barrel cutting newb should make a couple practise cuts first. If you're shortening a 28" barel, you can afford to cut off some 3"-4" long pieces as practise. If you aren't accustomed to using a hacksaw or a pipe cutter this is the place to learn and refine your technique BEFORE you make the critical cut at 18.5". Practise makes perfect.

Tools needed: Pipe cutter or hacksaw, 6" half round fine file, fine or medium emery cloth, square.

Why is this in hunting and sporting shotguns?.... lol
The OP is seeking advice on legal and technical matters. It is more often found in this form. The forum beneath this one however is an excellent place for fashion advice and perfecting your range swagger.
