Say it ain't so -- KevinB and Polymer mags...

Are the 100% clear ones out yet? I think 40's would be nice since they are so rare from anyone else then sterling which isnt making them anymore.

Kev;

We had a good discussion on this over at the TacRes forum.

The general idea here is the mag might survive, but if it is colapsing at all, you may very well end up with nothing more than an intact mag with crushed rounds to jam your chamber. And no appearant way to tell if the mag has endured any "stress".

I know it's risky, but the test is not very relivant if there are no rounds in it....

At least with a USGI mag you can tell when it's been crushed or misformed, and can avoid throwing a flat round into your chamber and jamming it.

I am all for a robust mag, but driving over it in a truck and seeing the follower function doesn't mean it's protecting the rounds inside.

Let me know how it works out.....

How do you use that extra mag holder?

It's got it's own release, you drop your live mag and pull the second one out of it's housing and slam it back in.

If I am not mistaken, the new Redi-Mag has the option of an extention that operates the release for the RediMag when you hit you mag release, so both release at the same time. (Murphy could really have some fun with that one LOL.)

This is a Redi-Mag Gen II -- it has a seperate paddle to jetison the second mag -- the First jestisoned both at one push of the mag release.

I plan on running it over loaded -- why would I care about an Empty MAG?
I disagree on the visible damage to USGI mags -- I've had a few that where damaged and did not feed for reasons undetectabe to the human eye (and in my resulting temper tantrum I thru a mag with about 17 rounds left in it away from me and off into the window of a hummer parked a few meter behind me).

It's not a temper tantrum... It is "desire to survive"... ;) And the thing has got to "run" when the time comes...

That looks like a normal 90/110 exhaust to me. They always curl the edge. The 90/110 have always had terrible legroom and driver space. They are based on a design from 1948. I am 6-4 and refuse to drive one, despite having been in the business for nearly 10 years.

Among other things. BTW do you see much Chinese ammo in use where you are?

Yah, theres a decent amount of it floating around. I saved a packing slip out of a case of 7.62x39 I shot....dated 1965.

The common 7.62x39 and x54 are Czech, Russian, Chinese, egyptian, and Iraqi. There's also some SA battlepacks with English markings floating around. Czech green casing ammo is my favorite if I'm slumming and carrying an AK.

Got it. I hit the website...nice product. May have to grab one and get rid of my nylon straps. THey always seem to grab the mag the too tight or not tight enough.

It's raining mags!

I was more worried about the plastic stringing back into place after a real deep blow and being undetectable. With metal it would stay put.

Call me a traditionalist. But again, let us know how it works out. I won't boycot a product just becasue it's plastic.. :)

MarkC and RobAk sold me on the Redi-Mag (well I should have listened to them much earlier than that) and I'm love it. I much prefer the GenII do to the option of only dropping the one mag in the gun.

Don't get me wrong I have been a little leery of the PMAG based on my Thermold POS experiences. and I wish Rich and co. would have had the decency to release the mag with an integral magpul (well duh) and the Ranger plates will not fit.

esquif... That is one funny link to destructive testing!!! ha ha ha!!!! Maybe KevinB could try that technique!!!!!!!!! bwahahahaha!!!!

Well despite being a vocal complainer about polymer mags (specifically the nigthmares I have of the CF issue Thermold C7/8 mags) However I have been running a Glock for a while - and our Sig552's have polymer mags so - obviously it is possible to build a good one.
A lot of fuss has been made of the Magpul PMag (which I can only guess stands for polymer mag).
So I looked around to find some online and had them shipped out (I'm still in Iraq).
So they arrive and looked good -- I quickly stocked them up with Mk262 Mod1. They seem to function fine - however I have had some durablity doubt about polymer in a M16FOW mag -- so with that in mind and inspired by the Magpul test videos -- I decided to run one over with the B6 Suburban -- to get the idea of weight - its a 2500 series Burb with a factory B6 Armor package - a 3 ton jack will not lift the damn thing to do a tire change - you need at least a 5 ton or the thing wont budge.
Secondly most testing had been done of EMPTY mags -- (I have my guesses as to why) but an empty mag reliability test really does not do much for me -- since I am concernd about the mag when its loaded - empty its no good to me.
so 28rds of Mk262 Mod1 in a PMag--meets Suburban.

and it survives -- no rounds even get popped out.
Not satisfied - I get the driver to reverse back over the mag

Iraq-Range26May009.jpg

crunch heard -- well so much for the PMAG
or not

Iraq-Range26May010.jpg

one round ejected - not exactly the 30rd "burst" I expected.
The mag's spine has been cracked -- but it does not appear to be a catostrophic failure -- thus I decided -- well will it work?

Well it shoots...

Iraq-Range26May024.jpg

As you can see minor case deformation occured on the rounds in the mag while it was run over.

and the mag ran during several drills -- ejected easily - and never caused a hickup -- reloaded and used 4 times after it cracked...
