Going to Quebec this year for a moose hunt at the end of September. This will be the first year that my hunt should fall near the pre-rut, rut. ( In ON, the area I was hunting usually opened after the rut).
Are you rut hunters using scent to attract bulls and if so what is the product. Lots of stuff out there, I trust the guys here to give the skinny on the products on the market.
Thanks
Sgt.

IF you are in the area during the rut, cow call will be best. Scent won't carry as far as a good cow call. And you control the call. Scents are controlled by the wind.Patience and cow calls.

Eat a bunch of that stuff, then collect the urine, works every time:D

Any commercial cow-in-heat urine or mares urine will work. I use scent bombs planted strategically the day before in an area I know a bull has claimed and is roaming. Chances are, when he makes his rounds that night, he will hit your scent and will wait for his girl friend. He will not be far when you get there the next am. A decent call should pull him in.

I would also create a false wallow hole around a bog or beaver pond with moose works, if there are not already natural wallows. A bull will not be able to resist urinating in that hole if there is already moose urine in there. He will leave his track to mark his presence at the wallow. Generally an indication that there is a cow which is either in heat or about to come into heat in the vicinity. As long as he does not get pushed out of there by hunting pressure or disturbance, he will come back to the wallow.

Synthetic scents work fine and have better shelf life than the real stuff.

As for calling, The Nature of Things had a great special on the mating language of moose a few years back. That has the best video and audio I have heard of actual moose mating sequences. Thanks David Suzuki, I could not have shot those big bulls without you...:p

Good luck:)
