Schmidt-Rubin 1889 X55?

I have seen and handled original, sportster in original caliber and sportster in 30-30.

Why do you ask?

I think there is one original for sale on EE.

because I know of one for sale and they said it was in 55 I just want to make sure its not actually 53.5.

I own a complete military example that is matching and made in 1892. She is a lovely rifle and extremely well made. I have a hand load ready to go, I just have to get myself a reloading press.

I believe the 53.5 ones have locking lugs only on the middle of the bolt, while the 55 had front ones as well. Hope someone that knows more than I know backs me up!

1889 Schmidt Rubin's have the locking lugs on the middle of the bolt. Later versions moved the locking lugs forward.1889's are a weaker action so care should be used when reloading for them. GP-11 should never be used in them. They were made for GP-90 loads and that was problematic also, therefore the change to forward locking lugs. The Harris universal load does work well with these and use it as a plinker .The GP-90 is the 53.5mm.

the 1889 is a 53.5 case, I love mine! great shooter, reload all my own ammo tho, I believe you can use the 55 brass as long as it will fit without jamming, i didnt have an issue with them, the only thing is you cant use the modern GP11 way to much pressure, a good guy to ask would be diopter he will know,

Nope.
1889, always with the 12 round mag, is in 7.5x53.5, or 30-30 if sporterized.

To get an idea of the power difference, one of my GP90 loads is to 35grs. H4895, whereas one of my GP11(7.5x55) is 45grs of H4895.
BTW: That's with an 178gr Amax bullet.

Multiple use of the GP11 level loads will bend the bolt sleeve.

As a guideline, starting loads for 7.5x55 is around max loads for the 7.5x53.5.

I didn't bother trimming the 7.5x55 cases for the two 1889s I have reloaded for.
