So I got this rifle and there are several points of interest I'd like to discuss.

First, the rifle. It was given to me by a good friend. I cleaned it up and went on the internet to find out more about it, that eventually brought me here.

So I find out that it's a Schmidt Rubin 1889 that's been modified to the model 1911, hence the stamp.

The modification was primarily a rechambering to 7.5x55.

That brings me to my main question - is it safe? The original ammo was much lower pressure and this rifle features a mismatched bolt with small rear locking lugs.

A few people are telling me to not shoot GP11 out of it.

So what's the deal, guys?

There's also a metal tab that seems to be part of the magazine release. However the whole system works fine without that tab so I don't know what it's for., seen below.

Note: The special removable clip is to hold magazine lever in down position. It's rare to find one with the rifle itself anymore

CAUTION: DO NOT shoot the M1889 Schmidt-Rubin using standard 7.5 x 55 Swiss (GP11) military surplus ammunition. Refer to collector feedback in the MKL entry.

Doug
