I saw a Schmidt-Rubins straight pull sporterized rifle that was rechambered for 30-30 at the last gun show. Might make an interesting fun gun.
I have seen a couple of posts referring to them. Are they any good or an exercise in frustration?

I think you might seen my post ealrier.

A buddy gave me one once that he got in a trade.

I would have kept it, but the wood was trashed by Bubba beyond belief, I mean it had already been sporterized but then he hacked at it with a rasp turning it into a bunch of splinters, sawed the buttstock off and glued an extension on, it was abysmal. The rear sight was hanging by a thread of metal and the magazine was missing.

It would be a fun gun. The barrel was pristine and made by SIG in Switzerland, so I gave it to a 'smith pal who has done stuff for me as favours and refused payment. He rebarrels and makes custom mix and match rifles so I thought he'd like it.

I still have the bolt though if anyone has one of these rifles and no bolt. I also have the stock, with the trigger guard and the magazine housing attached.

I think this was done mostly to older 1889 models. The 1889 was chambered in 7.5 x 53.5 and used a paper patched bullet. The new GP11 was adopted in 1911 and is 7.5 x 55. This is a much stronger action. The 1889 model can handle 30-30 pressure and it is much more common than the old Swiss round, so many were converted. Diopter is the Swiss guru around here, send him a pm, although I'm sure he will reply to this thread, he can't resist any Schmidt Rubin threads.:D

I picked one up last year at a gun show and have only taken it out once to the range since. Don't know what the problem was but after about 3-5 rounds of Federal ammo through it, the bolt started to get a tad sticky and had to be forced open. Can't remember if she acted up with Winchester brass or not. Going to have to take it back to the range and give it another go to see if the problem occurs. One thing I don't really care for is the rear site that is on it. If there was a way to adapt a Williams or another apeture sight and mount it on the reciever I would be quite happy.

Also, I think Deano is correct about the adaptation of the 1889 models to 30-30. I was looking at various sights doing a bit of research and my bolt appears to be a 1889 bolt.
