Just picked up one of the old girls that had been cut down and sleeved to 30-30 WCF, at my local gunshop for $70. It's the model 1911, that, I think International Firearms cut down and sleeved the chambers and added a front and rear sporter sight back in the mid to late sixties. The only numbers that match on the rifle are the bolt, receiver and bbl. the rest is a mixture. It's in good+ condition with a pristine bore. I had one of these several years ago, and it was very accurate even though it wasn't in as good condition as this one. If the old one hadn't been going to a young fellow, that turned into a really fine man, I might have regretted getting rid of it. He still has it and is going to give it to his son next year, as it seems to fit him well and he can shoot it very well because of the low recoil. Another good aquisition was a case of 1400, 7.62x39, South African, non corrosive primed, built to US gov't specs. Hope it shoots a well as it looks, beautiful shiney brass cases and annealed necks. Pricey but hopefully worth it. :runaway: :) bearhunter

I think there were quite a few of the older 1889 models that were converted to 30-30. How big is the magazine? Never heard of a 1911 model being converted. Sounds like you got a good shooter.

It has a five round magazine, didn't mean to brag, just happy to get the rifle and all of that premium non corrosive 7.62x39. Del Selins' in Vernon, BC, has another one for sale, in good - very good condition, with an excellent bore. PM me for the phone number if you're interested. Just checked "The Book of Rifles by WHB Smith an J Smith" if it's correct, and it usually is, the rifle is a 1911. bearhunter

Well after looking at the new posts an checking the book again, Deano is right, it's an 1889. this is almost (not) embarassing.

the way to tell if you have a 1911 or a 89/11 is the pistol grip if you look closely the bump on the bottom of the stock of a 89/11 the bump has been cut and glued into place as the original 1889 had a striaght stock. both have 6 rnd mags the original 1889 had a 12rnd mag

good for you tree mugger, finding one of the original stocks as well as the metal furnishings must have been a chore in itself. bearhunter
