I have found what i think may be a deal on a Para 1911 SST low round count with 2 stainless mags. I need to know if it is worth the 500 dollar price tag. It is untouched, stock everything including grips. The reason I need to know if it is a deal is if I do not like shooting it I want to be able to recoup my money or trade up. I know nothing about Para's, I am a handgun occasional shooter at best.

My buddy that showed me this site has had his sitting at para-ord canada warrenty depot for over a year now to get the safety/slide release plunger tube housing replaced.... broke off the gun in under 1k rounds, also has bad slide peening.

his gun is one of the single stack LTC's .... seriously a gunsmith should take 30 minutes to install that part, Para says they are having trouble getting the part, poor customer service as well as poor warrenty.

QC problem?? Is the SST something special?? I have googled it and found nothing on this model.

Did you mean the SSP? I owned one. I replaced the rear sights at my own cost because I had no success in convincing Para the pistol shot low. Basically, the wedgie I got was I didn't know how to shoot. Second was the slide peening. The burr was bad enough to draw blood but the wedgie I got on the peening issue was that it was 'normal', Para-normal that is....funny how a 20 year old Colt I owned didn't shoot low or exhibit any of the Para-normal peening. I paid almost $1200 for it new and figured I got the equivalent of $550 for it in a trade....I won't own another Para Ordnance product. YMMV.

It is because they are not worked on in canada now. It all happens in florida. I have a double stack lda tac forty and love this gun very much. I will post pics of it later. I have had zero issues yet and the thing is still running strong, although mine is a "made in canada" gun and not made in the states makes for a real difference. I have heard nothing but bad things about the ones made in the us. If it is canadian, get it.

Ummmm.....my SSP was 'Canadian' made and I know of three people at my range who own or have owned 'Canadian' made LTC's. Of the three only one is a happy customer. The other two traded off their LTC's at a great loss. One of the two actually made it back to Para for repairs, three times! After he got it back the third time he didn't even take it out to the range. He left it at the gunstore and had them sell it on consignment.....YMMV.

the LTC of my friends is a canadian made gun, the plunger housing broke right off, left the staked part in the gun and everything.

seriously, hot wheels have better quality control... talked to my buddy today and he is getting para to send his gun back unfixed and going to send it to armco and get gunnar to do it and replace the para part with a norinco one.

There may be different problems with any gun - design flaws, bad or low quality parts, bad fitting or bad finish, breakage.
With replaceable parts and fitting issues, it's often not worth getting it fixed under warranty as you waist tons of time and sometimes money too. Cannot do much about finish or design problems thou.
Para got popular when people discovered it came out with double stack mags and it was great advantage in IPSC/USPSA, and those same people would either tune the guns or get them tuned anyway before hitting the range. They wouldn't worry too much about finish either as guns see lots of use, wear and abuse too.

Knowing Para has a few models with issues, it's a good idea to avoid those guns based on model, year of production and finish.

I had one - 1640 Limited, it was finished in polished stainless and made in Canada - had no issues and sold it due to not using it, fired 250rds to test and sight in and it worked just fine, zero problems.

My $0.02 - research the gun and model well before you spend your money. If you already have one and it has developed issues - see if it can be fixed locally and for how much - may be well worth it.

I will say it again, I have put over 1k rounds through this pistol without a hiccup! It does depend on what model, if it is a monday gun or not. Some people have got to relax.

That's terrific that you were trying to explain to buddy about some stuff...however seeing as Para's horrible reputation began well before they left Canada, the stuff you're explaining is probably just misleading the OP.

In any case, you have a single gun that's been lightly used that has not ####ed up on you.

That's good and all, but having major QC problems doesn't mean that every single gun that leaves the shop will hand grenade within the first few hundred rounds, it means that odds of problems are high.

Para-Ordinance: odds of problems are high.

Hi all,

I feel that, if you need to carefully select a certain model from a maker to be sort of confident that it will work, then there are bigger problems at hand. This applies for anything.

My first gun ever was at the recommendation of the sales guy (I know, my fault for listening to him rather than getting the Colt I had intented on). It's just not worth plunking hard earned cash on a gun that might work great or more likely a lemon. Especially if everyone is giving you feedback on bad QA, warranty and customer service from said manufacturer. Why subject yourself to potentially this type of punishment? Yes every manufacturer can have a dud once in a while, but stick with the most reliable/reputable ones.

Sincerely,
on-ca
