Just got myself the above mentioned rifle, in really good condition, and I know nothing about the caliber. I know it's been around forever, but I'm hoping you 300 Savage experts will chime in to this thread. What type of game could I use this caliber to take provided I do my part in shot placement, and at what range on average is the caliber capable of, again providing I do my part. The rifle is scoped, so these old eyes have a chance to see through the glass. Feel free to give your honest thoughts. I know there are better calibers out there, as I have many, but I'm attracted to the history of the cartridge. Thanks in advance, for all the incoming comments, good or bad.

I'd shoot anything with it that I would with a .308 Winchester. Its minor short fall is a short neck causes heavy bullets to be seated deep and rob powder space. I'd probably load either the 130 ttsx or 165 Nosler Accubond, because they are already on my shelf, and hunt all of the North American deer family and black bears. If both of those bullets failed to shoot well I'd go to the flat based 150 and 165 interlocks or whatever other bullet struck my fancy.
The savage 99 in .300 Savage was very highly regarded around here for whitetails, moose and black bear until the late 70's according to the gentlemen that were alive and hunting during those years. Almost exclusively with 150 grain Dominion soft points, so modern bullets should be able to improve its performance.

Its between the 3030 and 308. I have the same said rifle. It was my grandfathers. 180 gr corloks killed many deer and several moose
Nice mild report and recoil. Maybe some day ill take mine out for bear

I have my fathers old Remington Model 81 300sav,... I have taken quite a few deer and a few bears with it using 150gr FN Winchester Silver Tips,... the 300sav with these bullets always was a hammer on deer.

IMO, the 300sav is one of the best medium range whitetail killers ever made. Only problem today is that ammo is hard to find and expensive.

Thanks guys! you made me feel better about my acquition, I've shot many moose with my 308 in a Rem 600, over the years, and had all my fillings jarred loose, so I guess I'm in the ball park with the 300 Savage. If I knew how to post pics, I would put some up of my beauty. Yesterday it was cold and windy (Prince George BC) so a trip to the range was out of the question. Our gunshow is coming up on the 14, 15 May, so I hope to pick up some ammo and go out to the range. Should be warmer then!.....Jim (crash60)

The 300 savage is a great old round . I had one in a Savage 99 , it shot best with 150 to 165 gr bullets , 180's tended to shoot larger groups in mine , your results may vary . I settled on 165 Interlocks in the end for general use , nothing ever walked away . Brass can be a pain to locate , but it's out there . It is a very useful round , it'll grow on you .

Glad I am not the only one who found a remington 600 in 308 a handful for what it was. No experience with a 300 savage but I would have no problem using one on deer/bear/moose.

Hello, Jim. I'm in PG as well, so if you want to talk about the 300 Savage sometime, PM me on here.
I have a Remington 700 "Classic" chambered in 300 Savage, and it has been a one-shot wonder so
far. 5 deer, 1 moose and one cow elk, plus 3 Black Bears. I load for it. I found that Reloder 15 or
Vihtavuori N540 are about perfect for bullets from 150 to 180 grains.
That being said, I use 150's and 165's exclusively in my rifle.
As has been stated, it is very similar to the 308 if you load for it in a strong action. I have found it
to be wonderfully accurate as well. Regards, Dave.

Hi Dave,
From what I've read, the 300 Savage is a wonderful cartridge from the past (Classic) and is still going strong, well maybe not so strong these days. I have multiple rifles to hunt with but I like how the 760 shoulders. Since we live about 2 kms apart, let visit Timmie's on the Hart for coffee, and talk about the guns......Jim(250-649-9977 (C))

Sounds great!! I put your number in my cell. We'll get together before long. Regards, Dave.

A friend of mine has a 300 savage in a remington 700 classic, he let me shoot a group out of it. I shot a tight cluster with it and noticed hardly any recoil. I could have shot that gun all day. It was fun to shoot. 300 savage is a good cartridge.

In a Savage 99 I had it shot 1/2-1" @ 100 yards with 42gr/Win 748/win brass/CCI #250 mag primer/150gr Hornady SP..............41gr for the 165grSP ............and 40gr for the 180SP all other components unchanged.Harold

I also had a model 99 in 300 Savage ,, I handloaded it and did shoot a nice buck with it .. so close too 308 that no animal will know the difference .. a little less recoil and a little less power..

There is something to be said for the Remington 760's and 7600's handling. If Remington 870's fit you these typically will too at least that is my impression of them. If you are going to scope it I recommend a compact scope mounted as low as possible.
I had one in .308 and am always keeping an eye out for a deal on another, although I'd prefer to try a 7600 in .35 Whelen or if I find a cheap enough donor follow in Ted's footsteps of building a .366 Wagner.
