Doesnt work like that, at least for us in the military. We use standard capacity in our service weapons and they stay at work. Outside the Batallion we my own firearms, its the Firearm Act for us too. Neutered mags with NR/R firearms.
I shoot on a DND range and we're very strict about it. No work stuff on the "civilian gun range"
Reliable gun has some extensions for lar-15 mags (orange c-product type) that make them same length as a 20 rounder. Probably would need to shave some mm off the bottom of follower legs as it's a bit sticky to insert on closed bolt.
So they're very strict about how often you can train? I did say the work range since as far as I know most departments have their own private range or at least have a designated range for training. I'm not sure how the military handles it but I've seen police, RCMP, and conservation all practice at public ranges and they don't run 10 round mags in their pistols.
It seems very silly that as military or law enforcement a person would be so restricted if they want to train more than enough to maintain the minimum skills required to pass the qualifications. I know many departments are limited as to how much free ammo is available but I would have thought they would still let you use the range.
Yes, exactly. I'm military and sad to say that we don't get enough time on the range. Even when we do it's normally for our annual qualification. You seldom get ranges where the focus is on teaching skills and drills.
If I managed to convince the chain to pay for some training then I'd be allowed to use DND equipment as long as the range was licensed for prohibs. Normally easier to bring the trainer to us, less paperwork.
They're not strict about us training. Our gun club is on the military base. Many military/ex military members and civilians. Same rules for everybody:
When using the range facility as a member of the club, we use neuteured magazines in our personnal rifles. Every military members get told to not use our work magazines in our personnal rifles/pistols and to follow the rules of the law.
When we are at work, we use our issued rifles/pistols/machineguns with the standard capacity magazines.
For training purposes, 5/30, lar15 or standard capacity magazines dont really matter, we actually get very good at the art of the magazine change
For LEO members, I just asked my QPP buddy over a beer, their policy is the following: they can shoot with their issued firearm with standard capacity magazine (Glock 17) at approved range. When they use their personnaly owned firearms, even if its a Glock 17, then its back to the neutered magazines.
We use to have our standard capacity magazines in our possession until a couple years ago... Now they sleep in the vaults with our weapon so people dont loose them/sell them/use them on the weekend at the range/gravel pit

If we could hit the range at least once a month and work on skills, that would still be better that what we do right now...

Not really because Questar already went down that road with the RCMP lab during initial development of LAR 15 magazines, the RCMP rejected all other magazine lengths except the 10 round mag body.

Uh.... This has never been OK. I've got 20yrs in and mags have always been secured in the vault. Prior to C68 it was likely fine.
Not that I haven't seen us break the rules numerous times because people don't have a clue. I've had tightly regulated equipment in my possession for a month on leave because my unit wanted it packed in personal luggage. Wouldn't listen when I told them it was illegal.
Well that's very sad that they trust you with them on the base and overseas but at home you aren't allowed to train with them.
On the other side if you were to use standard 5/30 neutered magazines for your training you would become very proficient at mag changes. Last summer during the CQB course I took with Tactical Teacher he designed the course around using magazines limited to 5 rounds and I had zero issues running 5/30 Pmags while the guys trying to use LAR, ATRS, and Beowulf mags seemed to be struggling with reliability and I could run the course just as fast using my 3-gun belt or with my chest rig. I just make do with what we are allowed that actually works and hope that some day the lawyers win the battle to let us remove the rivets.
