Looking at picking up a 22.
Want a plinker that I can afford to shoot even if business becomes poor.

Now, I now nothing on 22's.

I'm looking for a semi-auto 22, sturdy, accurate, RELIABLE with a 25+ round mag.
Don't want to break the bank.
Don't really care about looks as that's not what this is about.

Concerned with reliability & build quality. I don't want to be dicking around fixing stuff.
Want the ruggedness and quality of my M14 in a 22.

Edit: Would like to take my FastFire II red dot off my 30-30 and mount it on this, so a factory top rail would be a nice bonus (not a must)

Need some insight

For your requirements, definitely the Ruger 10/22. Only one with easily available and relatively inexpensive 25 round magazines. It is decent and reliable on it's own. If you have the funds or desire, you can customize it later to what ever you want or like.

Turn it tactical:

Or match:

Another option is Remington 597. Less magazine variety and less accessories, but it is cheaper. But it's also a Remington so reliability issues do crop up now and then.

There is also the Pietta PPS-50 if you can find it. They are in the $500 range, though.

Normally, if you want an affordable, accurate, no hassles out the box, and reliable .22LR semiauto plinker, I'd suggest a Marlin 795, Savage 64, or Mossberg 702 (in that order). But since you want something with mags more than 10 rounds then you're limited to the upper two. The Mossberg Tactical 22 will have 25 mags soon but the quality is questionable (the skin, not the action).

All these rifles are under $300 (not counting the tactical or match grade ones. Going into the $600+ range if you go there)

Thanks a0jc, very helpful.

The base Ruger with wood stock is like 270 ish.
The SR22 is around 600.

Is it worth the money? I don't know.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.........................

A $180 597 may experience reliability issues, however a $20 VQ extractor and or 5 minutes adjusting the guide rods fixes that. The 30 shot mags are $18. They generally tend to be more accurate out of the box than a 10/22. In all reality, I doubt you'll be disappointed by either....

Bugger the SR22, I'm grabbing the base Ruger 10/22 today. $230, couple of 25 mags, away we go.
Good call, I've got an SR-22 (and really, this rifle just starts at $600, goes way up from there the longer you own it).
I'm in the market for a 10/22 now myself to add to the collection.. Think I'll get the sporter model with the walnut stock.

DONE!

Picked up 2 Butler Creek 25 rounders, took the FastFire II off the 30-30 and mounted it on this. It even came with a weaver mount which was sweet.
Grabbed 1000 rounds.........$385. Not bad indeed :D

It's just so dame cute.
The M14's giving it the evil eye

I did say when you have more funds you can modify it later. And for practicality reasons, the regular is a better idea. The SR22 is just looks.

get the mags with metal lips

The plastic lip high cap mags fail quickly in a 10-22. I think the metal lip ones are called hot lips from butler creek

It's difficult to beat the 10/22 in 25 round magazines, reliability and it's fun as hell. You can upgrade it in any which way.

If you want a good bolt .22 though, the CZ 452 is fun and very robust and accurate. :)

I guess I'll see this thing tomorrow. You'll love it! We'll have a .22 shootoff then take turns on the gong with the .308s!

lol, got a stock coming.... it's top secret ;)
Down with a competition.
Got the 25 Butler mags yet?
I'm getting another 2. I'll share them if you like.
wherermykeys schooled me on the Blazer 22 ammo, which were CRAZY accurate!

See ya next weekend
