So I'm looking for a good 12ga O/U shotgun for hunting/light trap and skeet (maybe 5k rounds/year). Interchangable chokes are a must. I was looking primarily at something like a used Browning Citori White Lightning or Beretta 686 Onyx. How do these two compare to each other, and are there other options I should consider? I can also meet someone at T.I.T.S. to discuss options.

Either the Browning or the Beretta will easily last for many years, shooting 5000 rounds per year. Browning fits me better so I prefer to shoot the Citori.

Both are good guns. I've owned guns from both manufacturers and I prefer the Beretta because they fit me a little better and I like their handling over the Browning. But these are personal choices and if you can shoulder both guns and pick the one that feels better to you.

5K rounds a year is pretty decent volume. I shoot almost every week and will be in the 4-5K range. But as others have said, at that volume, Beretta and Browning are your gateway guns. I shoot a Browning XT and it is a very solid performer, bought it lightly used for around $2Kish. I prefer Browning to Beretta but again, its a fit issue and if the Beretta fit me better i'd own it. I see no real reason to favor one brand over the other... close your eyes, shoulder the various guns and let the fit guide you. When you find the right gun, you will shoulder it with your eyes closed and when you open them the beads will be lined up every time. Thats what you are looking for. Natural fit. Once you have that, then you can fine tune as you get more experience, but any changes will be minor. Remember, gun fit and comfort is paramount... not the quality of the wood grain or the gold triggers. I have a buddy that shoots his camouflaged pump with turkey choke and open sights on the trap field and at times he has put me, and a great number of blinder wearing Perazzi shooters to shame, because his gun fits him like an extension of his body and he knows how to shoot it.

You have mentioned hunting in the mix (Upland I take it?). The 686/687 12ga field models will be comparatively lighter with slimmer profiles......Citoris (exception Feather models and the 725) generally have bulky profiles, are inherently heavy which is a positive thing for clay shooting but not so much if one is planning on putting a lot of miles chasing birds.

As mentioned, gun fit should primarily dominate the selection process among different brands.

In general the Beretta is lighter, both are well made.
In my opinion a Browning 12ga is too heavy if you need to walk a lot in a hunt.
I use Browning for target shooting and a Beretta for hunting except for ducks I use a semi-auto Beretta..
If you need one shotgun for all , in your place I will get a Semi-Auto in 12ga.
