School me on the 7x57

Until a short while ago, the .270 was one of the more popular calibres today that I had never owned. Again, I thought while I can still make use of it, perhaps I should fill that calibre void in my 'collection' and did so with the model 3000 Husqvarna.

I had an uncle that spent the better part of a couple of years in Europe during WWII doing some 'long range' efforts. On the likes of Deer, Black Bear and Moose in the B.C. central interior, the .270 was one of his favorites.

On this years Antelope hunt on draw in Alberta, it was a toss-up between the .270 and a 7x61 S&H. The 7x61 got the call but the .270 will get the next call.

If you ever want to sell that husky, let me know. Would love one 270. Beautiful rifle!

I see a LH Zastava mod 70, 7x57 on a local classified... I enquired about it to see if it is brand new or just a new barrel...

It got me thinking about the 7x , although I wondered which rifle I would have to sell to fund it.. it would most likely have to be the T3 308.... so I cant really talk myself into that.
next would be the remington 700, sentimental values holds strong.. good calibre but would proberly prefer to screw on a 280 barrel later.

Looking at reloading data, the 7x57 is not going very hard to what I believe it could be possible... I suppose if I went anywhere it would be into 708 country.

Thanks... I think of myself as a "firearm portal"... through which they must pass and thus achieve a higher plane...

Well Hoyt, if you are a "firearm portal" then I would be the "BLACK HOLE" of firearms............once they go in the very, very seldom get out.........I haven't even finished my vault here in my new house in BC and I'm already looking where I can expand it to. I don't have enough room to build enough racks for the ones I have now...........and I'm still too young to quit buying and start selling.

The 7X57 is a cartridge I will someday own but do not at present.........my 7X57 vision is very clear though, 98 Mauser action, 19" octagon barreled full stock, double set triggers, butterknife bolt handle, claw mounts holding a 6X Zeiss scope. Wood to be of a highly figured butt with the correct flow of grain, European teardrop cheekpiece on a very straight combed butt. Neidner butt and grip cap with wrap over checkering on a very open pistol grip and some fancy checkering pattern fore and aft that has yet to be decided. All metal to be rust blued except the bolt and handle which will be polished and the bolt body and extractor will be finely jeweled. A Mod 70 fore/aft swing safety will be a must and the front trigger unset will be 3 lbs and not an ounce heavier. The bottom metal will be of the Oberndorf style and the set trigger guard will have the extended rear tang down into the grip. The front nose cap will be of an understated schnable. Rear sight mounted on a quarter rib integrally machined with the barrel and front will be a long smooth tapered ramp also machined with the barrel. Twist will be 1-9 to use the full range of 7mm bullets and of course I will never hunt with it 'cause it will be too beautiful and expensive..................

I have a 7x57 in a Remington 700 "Classic" It is a very fine example of the old chambering, and I will not part with it.

I took this year's Whitetail with it. [140 Accubond/Reloder 17] In one side, out the other.....DRT. Lungs pretty mushy.

Effective while remaining mild mannered, that is the 7x57. Regards, Dave.

I have a Mod 54 Winchester in 7x57, no mods with peep site, old farm gun with very few rds through it. Made in 1928-29. Wouldn't hesitate in a minute about takin it hunting anything in BC.

She's prrrretty darn light for Bison there. ;) Lovely cartridge, but it has its limitations. This who will reference Bell and his elephants need to read his book to understand the circumstances.

There is another solution to consider. You could adopt me.:p
