School Me On the 9.3x57

If anybody is looking to join the 9.3x57 club check out the EE, Why Not? has an absolutely gorgeous husqvarna listed there. It's priced at $550 shipped but with what's been done to the rifle and its condition, it's worth it. Timney trigger, decelerator pad, and what looks to be a beautiful refinished stock. Almost makes me want to sell mine and buy it, but I'm already into mine with bolt handle job.

I've been shooting 270gr. Matrix out of my Husqvarna 46A and it sure worked on this bull moose.

Since then, I've turned it into a bit of a (3 so far) "winter project". I wanted it as a "snowy day" close range open sight rifle so I cut the barrel back to 20.5" and wanted a peep sight for it. I didn't want to put much more money into it, so I decided on the 6/48" Skinner Lo-Pro (I've also taken the original rear sight off as it interfered)

I'm hoping to get the front sight reinstalled over the winter and get it back into the field.

Nice work Cory, the perfect "snowy day" rifle indeed. I am curious, did you happen to chronograph your loads before cutting the barrel? Perhaps you could try the same load now and see what the velocity loss is. If you ever try it out please let me know since mine is at 20.5" also and it would be useful info for reloading.

I did chrono the load before and I saved some from that "batch" to run over the chrono with the shorter barrel...I just don't know when I'll have a chance to.

Good thinking on saving the ammo to try, I think I remember hearing the loss is something like 20 fps per inch for most rifles.. could be wrong on that though.

^think it depends on the burn rate of the powder, cartridge shape, what gun writer you are reading etc.

Cory did you drill and tap the receiver or was it already done?

I'm trying to find the perfect 9.3 with one of the prince of whales styles stocks now.

Around 35 years ago, I had Bevan King barrel up a pair of 9.3X57s on Turkish Mausers. I had read about the '57 in Cartridges of the World, and it appeared that it was loaded to very low pressure to accommodate the weaker 88 actions. Checked with Norma, and indeed factory ammo was only around 37,000 cup.

Having already used the 9.3X62 for a while, I was curious about the '57 if it were loaded to higher pressure. Bought the reamer, and Bevan did the job one weekend.

The Turk Mausers are very strong VZ actions, and it was no trick at all to get velocities close to factory 9.3X62 loads using Ball C2 in resized 8X57 brass. Both rifles are still bagging bears and moose.

AmmoMart had thousands of Norma 286 gr Dual Core bullets for $20 per hundred. Those bullets were accurate and deadly on big game at close to 2300 fps. Still have half a bag here.

Today, the 270 gr Speer is what I load more than anything else in my Model 46.

It is very accurate and a hammer at 2400 fps on big game. Friend of mine calls it my 358 Winchester Magnum. :)

Thanks for your response Ted.

Everytime I read cartridges of the world, I want to buy a new gun...

Do you reload to those velocities for the 1896 action?

I do, however Daryl S on Gunboards is a wealth of information on loading for the '57. He lives in BC, and has done more work on this cartridge than anyone I know. Here's a link to his first post of many on a thread devoted to handloading the 9.3X57.

http://forums.gunboards.com/showthread.php?645-Handloading-the-9-3x57&p=207227#post207227

He also developed loads using resized .375 bullets for hunting, and has them posted later in the thread.

Anyone considering loading for this round should grab a coffee, spend an hour or so reading the posts before and after his, as well. Do so, and you will have all you need to wring the best out of you 9.3X57 rifles.

Love that Stock. Curly Maple?

Bumping this one to ask the 9.3x57 shooters.

Does anyone use a lee cutter and lock stud with a 8x57 length gauge and shellholder to trim their 9.3 brass?
