School me on the M77

As far as I can tell, they they have already changed. I started an import in mid march through Prophet River and it's the same procedure as before (i.e. the importer doesn't have to pay the seller on my behalf).

That is good to hear... so is the additional service fee also gone? I will give Prophet River a call and see what the new regs are.

I'm not one to chase ounces... I prefer a solid, hefty rifle. My mountain goat rifle was 8.5 pounds scoped... and carried that through some miserably verticle terrain. I also find that I shoot better with a little more weight in my hands. As long as it comes in under 9 pounds scope and loaded, I am happy. I have a few shorties (Frontiers et al), that come in under 8 pounds scope and loaded.... those are my "Ultralights."

Here are a pair of .358 Carbines;

Fantastic pic of the you and the goat.

I currently only have one M77, a hawkeye in the aforementioned matte stainless but it has been a fine rifle, asking for nothing in return. The pics of stainless with nice wood have me thinking now. :)

Yes, just the GST and the $200-250 charge per rifle. They were supposed to update their website with the info but it looks like it hasn't been done yet. Best to email Melissa@prophetriver.com. I imported my rifle via Leroy's in Montana (which they normal use for scopes and shotguns). It was even easier than the previous company they used. The seller didn't need to fill out any paperwork.

They are using a broker in Ohio now... at least they did for my latest import yesterday. It is even easier than before the regulation changes... no more paperwork... the vendor just sends an invoice with the firearm to the FFL dealer. We shall see how smooth this goes... looking forward to this piece arriving, I have plans for it.

I have a tang safety in 308WIN. Its my favourite gun. Shoots well, carries nice, and fits me perfectly.

I also have a 77/44. This is one of my desktop pics at the office

My only Model 77 at present is a Series 2, blued steel and walnut in 338 Win. Got it from a fellow on here a few months ago. Have only loaded 225gr Remington Core Lokt Ultra bullets ahead of Re19.

It is very accurate off the bench all the way out to 300 meters.

Hands down my favorite rifle platform.... I currently own 12, but have owned them in almost all of the configurations made (never owned a frontier or an African, but have owned a guide gun which is essentially an African)...

Very partial to the MKII safety configuration and bluing vs the bbq paint. The "all weather" coating is not as nice as the true stainless, but I don't mind it..... My scout has the all weather coating and has seen at least 100 plus days of dogging whitetail and two weeks of hog hunting and still looks great....

I moved along most of the Tang safety models I owned and am down to one, an m77 rs carbine in .358 win.....

OP, to answer your question, the m77 mkII is a super solid platform with many configurations..... You should definitely find something that suits your tastes in their lineup....

Bill Ruger left a legacy before he passed away in the Express and the RSM
I get a grin every time I shoulder those rifles because they are absolute classic.
They are heavy by today’s standards but I doubt we will ever see any other maker retail rifles like that.
Pure gold and someday I would love to take the pair to Africa.
One Black Wildebeest and one Buffalo.
Ahhh bucket lists!

I had a beautiful rsm in 375 h&h that I got from Hoyt..... They are amazing rifles, and I agree that they are truly representative of Bill's legacy......

That being said, I had the pleasure of owning and shooting it before moving it along and used the proceeds to fund a great hunt.....

Ive been thinking of putting mine into a wildcat stock

I have put a couple tang safety Rugers into Wildcat stocks. They work out fine; though I find the Wildcat stock to be just a little fat. Not heavy, just a little thick in the midsection. Still. I like mine.

Ruger is known as a well built durable rifle. It’s hard to drop a bunch of weight on a Ruger.
I haven’t heard of many Ruger failures. Maybe one where a guy had problems with an extractor. But I’m not convinced that was the rifles fault. ;-)

I have never had a single functionality issue with any Ruger I have ever owned..... Not one..... I have had a couple that didn't shoot to my liking, but I would say that's likely the same with any manufacturer.....

My brother's scout's safety wouldn't function properly and after living with the warranty division for 6 months they ended up sending him a new one, so that's nice.

My only complaint with my African and my Scout is that the LC6 triggers are too damn heavy. I was reading a review on the new M77 Hunter and they tested the trigger at 3.5lbs so I emailed Ruger asking if there was a retrofit package or a way to get my weight down and they said:
"We do not offer any retrofit packages - the Scout & African trigger pull both have a 3.5-7 lbs. trigger pull.

Best Regards,

Ruger Customer Service"

I don't know if that's model dependent or if it's the same a going and buying a car and being told its engine may make anywhere between 150hp and 700hp but who's to say.

My first rifle, which I still have, was a tang safety Ultra Light in 270 Win. That rifle has always been very accurate, especially considering its pencil barrel. It's taken a lot of game over the years. I've had a lot of 77s in all configurations and only one was a stinker, a tang safety in 300 Win Mag, I believe it had one of the crappy barrels. Other than that never an issue or malfunction with a Ruger here.

In the 90’s my dad let me pick out a hunting rifle for us both to get. I chose the ruger m77 stainless “all weather” mkii in 30-06. My dad ordered two. Mine arrived first, and do to short supply it took a little while longer for his to arrive. When it did we realized either through an error of the dealer or my dad ordering, his came with the super light pencil barrel. Its a pretty dramatic difference in weight. We got a lot of use out of the rifles. I loved mine but I was never blown away with the accuracy, and in the last year I got into reloading to try and get it dialled in. Ive recently figured out the first shot of the cold barrel is very repeatable but after even one shot the group starts to open. Letting the rifle cool 5 min between shots I was able to make 5 shot sub moa groups.

I lost my dad 2 years ago and so now sadly I have both rifles. Hopefully I can get his dialled in too.
