Are there any standardized regulations on how different the design has to be from the original? For example the Sig550 is prohibited but the PE90 seems to be available in Canada. In Germany it's the original barrel that makes the PE version of the 550 a prohibited weapon, so Sig Sauer now produces a version with a civilian made barrel and we are good to go.

Das ist die $1.000.000 Frage. The RCMP won't publicise their methodology, probably because it is neither logical nor consistent.

The rifles we get have nothing to do with the 550, they are marketed as 540 variants which arent on the prohibited list. Its not a matter of how different, its a mixture of voodoo and what the manufacturer says there gun is a variant of.

In Germany I could own all the machineguns I want as long as I dint have the barrels. World is full of weird laws.

Unfortunately it's not quite that easy. The barrel and the bolt mustn't be "military production" and of course it has to be semi-automatic. Then the federal police decides if the design of the semi-auto is ok or if it's too easy to convert it to fa mode. This leads to some rather weird decissions. The Dragunov is a big no no because it contains a "military barrel" but the Tigr (which is basically the same rifle) is ok. Then there are some restrictions on target shooting rifles. The barrel of an "evil looking" rifle must be at least 42cm long and minimum case length is 40mm. So a semi-auto AK47 clone in 7.62x39 would be allowed for hunting or collecting but not for target shooting. If you buy the same rifle in .223 (5.56x45) it's ok. Please don't ask me where there is a sense in that regulation (there is none). But I guess we shouldn't forget that these were made by politicians. :bangHead:
