I am trying to choose a scope for a .243. It must have a bdc reticle, and be ~$400.
It's a deer gun shooting 80 grain TTSX, will not be hunting in dense bush, and a 300 yard shot in a logging cut block is not out of the question.
Zeiss is out due to price, Bushnell's DOA reticle is off the list, so Minox, Leupy, Nikon, Vortex...I can't wait for something used to pop up as it is a gift.
I find this way harder than choosing a rifle or caliber; I would appreciate hearing some opinions.
Thanks in advance.

Vortex diamondback or viper. I paid just over $200 for the diamondback (4-12x40) and Just over 400 for the viper (3-9x40) Both have bdc and adjustable turrets

I've got a 6x36 with LR reticle on a 243.

If your maximum range is 300m why bother with a BDC reticle?
Sight 2"-2.5" high at 100m and go hunting.

Another vote here for that. At 300 yards with your PBR set up right you should just be able to hold on the vitals and pull the trigger. Out to 400 is a different story but still do able with some practice. Not that the different reticle is much money, id still put it towards nicer glass. I had a leupold vx-1 4-12x40 on a .243 I just sold and it was great.

I'd go Viper over Diamondback, so really it's between the Viper and the VX-1/2 Leupold then.
I have looked through them both. The only thing I don't like about Leupolds is that the eye relief changes when you go from low to high. 3-9 vs 4-12?
Anything else one way or the other?

I have a vortex viper 4x16x44mm with the normal reticle on my 6mm and find it is just as good as the leupold vxII 4x12x50mm that I had on it, but neither are as good as the conquest 4.5x14x50mm I have on the 300wsm. Try to find a used viper and you won't be disappointed.
Cheers
Geoff

Thank you everyone. I am now looking for a 3-9 with a bdc reticle.
What is the benefit of a VX-2 over a VX-1, there must be something.

Burris fullfield II 3-9x40 will suit your needs to a tee.Canadian Leupold prices are a rip off but you could always buy used.I have a 4-12x40AO bushnell elite 3200 on my .243 but i might rob it for my .204.If i do,i'll likely grab a fullfield II for the .243 or maybe splerge a bit for a clearout zeiss 3-9x40.

Save your money and purchase a Leupold when you can afford one, and don't cheap out on the mounts either. A 1.5-5X, a 1.75-6X or a 2-7X are examples of suitable magnification for a big game scope, used to a maximum range of 300 yards. The only reason to choose a scope with greater magnification would be if you were to shoot smaller targets at longer range. The low power setting provides the field of view necessary for close range shots on moving targets, and the higher magnification allows you to clearly see the target at long range.

Burris FullField 2 in 3x9 is a awesome little optic. I was very surprised by the clarity of the glass for the price range, I had some leupolds and bushnells in this price range as well, they dont even touch it for clarity.
