Hello,

I bought a new Leupold VXIII 3.5X10x50 about 4 yrs ago. First two seasons I had no problems with it atl all. The third season was horrible. Missed everything I was shooting at. Every time I resighted in the scope was way out. Figured it was broke so I shipped it to Leupold's service dept. in Calgary. Got it back for last season. Sighted it in. at 100 yrd I had 5 shots all touching in the bullseye:)

Took it out for deer season and guess what? Yup, It was way out yet again. Some may say it could be me but I used a bench rest and let some of my friends try as well. I am very confident that the problem isn't the shooter. I'm also sure that the rifle/scope was not dropped or abused in any way.

I'm going to have to get if fixed again. My question is it worth getting fixed; in that it was "fixed" once already and had the same problem again. Will Leupold replace the scope? This is a very frustrating problem as one could imagine. My last two rifle season's were a complere wash.

Thanks

Sean

I'm surprised, I've owned a lot of Leupolds over the years and the few that did need maintenance came back as good as new. I'd phone the Alberta service center, let them know the problem and then send it back again, it's a great product but I guess nothing is perfect.

Stonyman, are you absolutely sure it is the scope? Is it possible you have a mount problem? Do you know exactly what was fixed the last time?

Anything can break, but the VX III has an excellent track record as does the repair centre.

I'd be feeling like the scope was cursed. But its too nice of a scope to give up on. I think I'd look carefully to make sure there isn't a problem with either the mounts, rings or some bedding issue with the stock (barrel fully floated, plenty of clearance?). Is the ammo from the same batch as you sighted in with? Man, that would be frustrating.

Can you try the scope on another rifle?

is your rifle in a wood stock. does the point of impact change with the weather. is there side to side preasure on the forend. i had a parker in 308 that the forend moved with the weather, ended up having to have a good 1/8 of an inch clearance in the barrel chanelto prevent wandering. this is why i like synthetic stocks.

Stonyman,
When you say it's way out, do you mean the POI changed or the groups fell apart? If it still shoots, just to somewhere else look for a gun problem. If it shoots all over the place look to your mounts. Make sure that the scope isn't sliding in the rings. I usually find a few of those for other shooters every year.
You could also cut your losses and sell it to me cheap.

I have owned many Leupolds over the years and touch wood!! have never had a problem with any or have any of my friends, never sent one back for service. I have mounted quite a few scopes for fellows and always lap rings, I have seen some of the lower end rings that would have only 25 to 30% contact on scope tube they where absolutly terrible, but after lapping you get 100% contact, so your scope should never move, but like other members said CHECK BASES & AND FOR SURE BEDDING.
let us know how you do, and results at Leupold repair center

No need to guess, if its yours mounts that are the problem or the scope, the guys at Korth will test and give you the results. I had a scope that if figured had problems and the Leupold service tech gave me a detailed report and turned up it was my mounts and not the scope. Either way you should get a report telling you if the scope is faulty or its an issue with the mounts.
Ive mentioned this in other posts but the Leupold guys are "the best" when it comes to repair, service and knowing their product.

Cheers!!

Ever wonder why it was common practice in Europe for the scope, rings, mounts and receiver to be silver-soldered to each other?
