Hey fellas I've got an M-14s that I would like to set up for some long distance target shooting. In your opinion what would be a good scope to get?

From everything I have heard your biggest concern with the M-14 is a good mount. I assume you have that, or else no scope will work out for you. You also got to give us some more info. Price point? How long distance? that M-14s is no precision rifle so a big, expensive, high-mag target scope won't do to much for ya. With a military style rifle like that I would go with something small and low-mag for quick target aquisition. Which small, low-mag scope would depend on your budget. Also, don't expect serious long range performace with that rifle out of the box.

So I have a mnt, and 500.00 What I was thinking of was being able to hit paper at 400m +. What will be required to do to the gun to get to hit that far? I've got a SS op rod I'm planing on getting the barrel glass bedded. what else will be needed all BS aside?

There is a LOT of information on this site about how to tune up one of these rifles without spending a fortune.
A Bushnell 10x40 might be a good choice, not too expensive, doesn't seem to have any chronic problems.
Shot with a chap this past weekend who was shooting a stock rifle with a Leupold in a decent mount. It was doing just fine back to 500m.

if it means anything , all of my m14s wear a 4x12x40 bushnell either scopechief or banner- but be warned, the m14 does 400 yards/meters absolutely NAKED - no glass required- with boring regularity - the real reason to glass them is to shrink the SIZE of the group, not to hit targets- the same reason as you do load development- i've got 4 of the darned things and with my hand loads they do moa at 100 yards or better- the norinco is a real old one that's blued, not parked, and it does the poorest of the lot, but in all fairness the other 3 are isreali safe queens

I'd get a scope with target turrets so that I could adjust for 100-400 yards and have repeatable zero's at each distance. Cheapest would be a Bushnell 3200 10x tactical mildot (~$250), stepping up from there would be a Bushnell 5-15x40 tactical (~$450) or Falcon Menance with tactical knobs (??? $400-$450?).

Well if you do want to bang targets at long distance look through the main battle rifle fourm as there is a bunch of knowledge there, but it seems like your on the right track. I have a Bushnell elite 3200 10x40 mil-dot with the tactical knobs on my varmint rifle. You can pick them up at wholesale for $240. It performs quite well, it's built solid and dosn't lose zero or anything like that. The optical clarity is good but not excellent as there is some field curvature and edge clarity is not the best but for banging paper it dosn't matter. If you want more than that try and find a Falcon Menace. I think that Bushnell will suit your needs though. Pump the rest of the money into upgrades and ammo.

The 3200 10x is the official scope of North China Industries. It's the best buy for the M14 and I'd hazard a guess that 40-50% of the shooters on CGN with Norc M14s are using this scope. Sure Timmins is using a 2.5-10x NXS, but he also owns the priciest Norc M14 in the world. Go for the happy medium between the Counterfeit Mark 4 and the NXS.
