Bought one a few years ago off e-bay and use it regularly. I can't remember how much I paid but I believe somewhat less than Brownells' price.
Try to get the one that will handle both 1" and 30mm scopes. I just found a couple of 1" on e-bay (one located in Quebec) made of aircraft aluminum - mine are steel and will handle both sizes.
Not only that it helps you prevent damages to the scope but I found that I can check for underlying problems with the base(s) and rings and not to forget checking for the satisfactory height of base's platforms on guns with different platform heights such as the Remington 700 SPS, etc.
Wouldn't using a scope ring lapping tool right from the get go be a better option? If the alignment tool tells you there is a problem you're going to need one anyway, might as well just lap them from the start...or get Burris Zee rings.
The tool will tell you if the rings are grossly misaligned, such that a reamer will not fix the problem. Occasionally you run into a combination of receiver, mount(s), rings that puts the rings way out of line. - dan
