Scope and Spotting Scope for 300m shooting

FWIW resolution is more important than magnification. A lower priced high power spotting scope will not likely have the resolution to allow holes to be seen unless conditions are just right. The best scopes won't be able to define scopes when conditions are poor. Resolution in a rifle scope is often better than in a spotting scope, of the same power. I can see holes much more easily through the high magnifcation scopes on my benchrest rifles (Leupolds) than through a Bushnell variable spotter set to the same magnification. Rather than buying a scope and hoping for the best, it might be best to try some spotters and see if you can get the results you are looking for. For the TR shooting Maynard has referred to, I have used the variable Bushnell I mentionned, and currently use a 20x Kowa compact. Both work for the purpose.
 
I've been checking out the Bushnell Elite 4200 and have many buddies to who swear by then. I know I can look thourgh my friend 10x 3200 all day with out much discomfrot.

I think the Elite 4200 8x32 might be the way to do if I can find it in a 40mm. Luckly I've got a huge Mellon so I should be able to get away with some higher mounts.

In good light I can generally see 22 calibre holes in paper with the naked eye. I have a 4x12x40 Nikon Monarch on my 223 and I can see holes out to 200 metres. Beyond that they are hard to see even with a spotting scope. The key to seeing those holes at long range is contrast, if there is sun behind you target shoot dark targets, if it's dark behind shoot. the best are the shootnsee targets that show the reflective mark where you hit.
 
The guys that designed the range where i shoot seem to be pretty smart guys, the sun always seems to work in your favour there. I can pick up .22 groups at 100m with a 4x very well ... black holes on a white page seems to work rather well. Those Shoot and See targets are just too expensive to shoot at all day ...
