Hi All,
I've always thought that the closer a scope is to the barrel, the better.
How close is to close ?
I'm mounting a scope on my bolt-action .308 and it's very close, I can get a piece of paper to move freely between the bell end of the scope and the barrel, but that's it. Should I get the next higher set of rings ? ( the next set are 1.075" and the set I have are .925"), or the highs that are 1.225" ? Oh, and the scope is a 6x24x50 with a 30mm tube.
Thanks in advance for your replies...
Cheers

Put the rifle to your shoulder in your shooting position with your cheek on the stock/cheek piece. Close your shooting eye then open it when in position. Your eye should be centered in the scope's eyepiece. Select the height of mounts that does this.

"A piece of paper" is not much in the way of clearance. Temperature and harmonics just might cause you a problem. I think that you had better have at least two thickness of paper, or at least more than you have now!

you need 3 pieces of paper clearance, the movement of the barrel can be enough to hit the bell on the scope at minimum knocking it out of zero every shot, at worst breaking the lens. Even heat from the barrel can affect the scope, You do need some space, 3 pieces of normal photo copy paper is about the minimum you should have.
