HI Guys,

So the trigger is all fixed up and now I want to mount a nice scope. The rifle came with Weaver 45-46 bases on it and I did my preliminary check with the steel rule for level etc. and found that the rear mount is about .020" high and has been rubbing along the edges of the base, rubbing thru the bluing. I tried the 55 rear base and it is about .020" low. I also have a new set of Redfield SR-M99 bases, same issue. I checked back in my old Shooter'S Bible and the rifle is listed as using the 45/46 combo.

So my questions is, are these supposed to be plug 'n play or is some machining required? I could either shim up the front or machine the rear of the original 45/46 bases.

Either that or scour the Weaver base chart and find something that is in between, yet will still fit the Spanish Mauser.

What should I do?

Thanks

Looking at Baribal's photo's on your other thread it "looks" like he used Epoxy (Devcon) to bed/raise the rear base a touch ... Seems like a good way to go ...

That's a good idea as well. I just didn't want to "Red Green" this with such a nice rifle by doing it the wrong way. So I compromised. I happened to have a cylindrical grinding stone about 1.4" diameter, damn near perfect Mauser fit, so I loaded it in the die grinder and slowly eased down about .010-.015"' and got to where I wasn't comfortable going any further. It was really close and within .005 front to back in thickness on the 45 base, so I called it good. Then I used 5 pieces of heavy tin foil cut just slightly smaller than the 46 base and used that to shim up the front. You can't even tell they are there. Bases are perfectly level now, and hopefully will also be in line with the bore. Mounting a scope and then off to the range to site it in. Maybe I was being too fussy as the rifle is 40+ years old and had these bases for quite a while if they wore thru the bluing. At least I know they are mounted correctly now.

Thanks guys, again for the help.

Cheers
