Scope Bite FIRST and Second VID IS UP

3 years ago, my first trip to a range after getting my membership and my first rimfire. I shot for about an hour admiring my new rifle. A guy next to me asked me if I want to shoot 378 Weatherby Magnum. Sure I said. I just got the hang of the rimfire, I held the guy's rifle too lightly and to close to the scope. I pulled the trigger and my face looked similar to that lady on the first page of this thread. My wife wasn't impressed. That did not discourage me that much. A month later I went again with my new rifles. That taught me a lesson though to take shooting seriously. A big rifle is not a toy.
 
I might add, it hurt like bloody hell. I actually shed more tears than blood. No no....I didn't cry....my eyes just oozed tears and my nose oozed blood and my mouth oozed swear words that I'd rather not mention here.

That must have hurt a lot!!!I din't get scoped but did punch myself in the nose with a Mosin Nagant! First thing was to check for blood . I had to adjust my hold to get my cheek lock farther back to get clearance. I was the first high power rifle I'd fired, only lr up to that point.

As an old shot gunner and war vet in the club I was first at showed me...this is usually caused by having ones trigger elbow dropped below the level of the shoulder line...thus reducing the pocket for the butt stock to sit in.

Folks that shoot a lot of .22 rimfire often develop this habit...due to not having to fight any recoil. Then when the big guns come out they often find the butt stock has a mind of it's own. :D
 
My first badge of honor was when I was about 16. Out a few days prior with the 22 hunting grouse. Next day deer season started and out came the model 88 Winchester in .308. No deer that day but found a grouse. Used my dads shoulder as a rest and with the butt stock not even touching my shoulder. Oh, and the rubber ring on the back of the scope was missing. Didn't break my nose but sure felt like I did and the blood was all over. All my dad could say was "you got the grouse" than turned around to see the gun on the ground and me holding my face. Lesson learned.
 
How far from your eye should the scope be in order to avoid scope bite? I've just bought a .270 as my first rifle, and I'm not sure if I'll need to move the scope a bit when it arrives or not.

Every scope has its own fixed eye relief. If you know the make/model, you should be able to look them up and find specs on that scope.

Otherwise, when looking through a scope, if your eye is in front of or behind the focal point, the scope won't have a full image. You will still be able to see through the scope, but there will be a black ring around the image.

Adjust the scope so that when you naturally shoulder the rifle, your eye is in the perfect location. Ie. with a full image.
 
Heavy recoiling rifle + LER scope = A good thing.

was sixteen shooting my new(german made) weatherby with an ancient old scope and at the shot there was blood everywhere....... now 5 years later I did the same damn with with my H&H.... its interesting to see the scars one above the other! Congrats wookie on getting drawn, I got drawn in 48.
 
My wife is 33 weeks preggers and laughed so fricken hard at the second vid (gopher part) we almost ended up with an early delivery. :D

I don't mind throwing up the "one ragged hole" targets, and I certainly don't mind throwing up the ones that aren't. I was minute of deer, with a bloody nose, alright by my standards .. God knows I've been worse...:)
 
HAHAHAHAHA....laughed so hard my drink of rum came out my nose....kinda burns....but doesn't hurt as bad as scope bite...from a 30-30...hehe....good vid man...cheers
